Russell Wilson is staying in Seattle, and these teams would have loved it if the Super Bowl-winning quarterback had hit the market.

UPDATE: Russell Wilson is going to stay in Seattle. The Seahawks are making him the highest paid player in NFL history, which is the right move considering no amount of return on a trade for him would have matched in value.

Had a team traded two first round picks for Wilson, that still doesn’t equate to the value he’d bring to his new team. There isn’t a Russell Wilson in this year’s draft or the next one — stop underrated his talents and devaluing how great a quarterback he is.

While he’s staying in Seattle for what is likely the rest of his career, that doesn’t mean we can’t look back at what might have been if he’d hit the market either in a trade scenario or as a free agent.

This post was written while it sounded like Wilson could be dealt if things didn’t shake out the way they did. So read it in that context.

5. Denver Broncos

The Broncos already traded for one Super Bowl MVP quarterback in Joe Flacco, but he was always a short-term solution for the franchise. John Elway once convinced Peyton Manning to come to Denver to finish his career, and he could hit a home run for the Broncos by landing Wilson at age 30.

Wilson still has about a decade of elite football left, and he could be the perfect fit for Denver, which needs a quarterback to try and compete with the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. The Broncos already have a lethal defense that can make life tough on the Chiefs, but Wilson would give them the firepower to stay in shootouts with Kansas City.

There is the small matter of dealing with Flacco and salary cap ramifications, but that’s an issue Elway can deal with later. Landing Wilson would bring the Broncos back to the top of the AFC heap, something that hasn’t been the case since Manning retired after the 2015 season.
