Roast of Ric Flair set to headline Starrcast II in May
The Roast of Ric Flair is the headlining event of Starrcast II, with wrestlers and comedians set to take on the life of “The Nature Boy.”
More news is starting to pour out ahead of Starrcast II, Conrad Thompson’s pro wrestling fan and podcast convention that takes place on May 23 through 26 in Las Vegas to correspond with All Elite Wrestling’s Double or Nothing on May 25. Various “Superstarrs” have already been announced, as well as events such as “Behind the Paint” with Sting and Tony Schiavone, live episodes of the Talk is Jericho and Bruce Prichard’s Something to Wrestle With podcasts and more.
And on Thursday, Starrcast announced (via CBS Sports) that the headlining event of the convention will be the Roast of Ric Flair. Last year, the Roast of Bruce Prichard was one of the most-popular events and there’s no doubt that Flair and the decades of material he’s produced will be an even bigger affair.
The Roast, set for Friday, May 24 at 9 PM ET (and available to stream) will feature both pro wrestlers and stand-up comedians to give their comedic (and likely, bawdy) takes on the life of the 16-time World Champion.
Thompson said to CBS Sports that the roast “will also have a whole host of wrestling names, whether it’s people from Ric’s past like Ricky Steamboat, probably his favorite opponent, or Jim Ross, who called some of his more iconic matches.” Comedians slated include Ron Funches, Dan Soder of Billions, Taylor Williamson from America’s Got Talent and Dan St. Germain. Thompson added, “the comedians are itching for the chance to carve up not just Ric but our dais as well. We are excited to have some fun, but some of these guys, they are not going for laughs. They are going for gasps.”
Flair is ready, saying:
"Ninety-five [of the stories told about me] percent [are probably true], I’ll give you that. The problem is there have been too many stories. People love to tell stories that never happened, on top of the good and bad. I’ve got sisters, cousins, relatives all over the world according to people."
The legend and two-time WWE Hall of Famer also explained why he agreed to Roast at Starrcast II. “I’ve got a lot of history with Caesar’s Palace. Oh God, it was a regular stop in the 80s and 90s,” said Flair, who added, “I’m lucky to be here and every day is a blessing. But one of those reasons is Las Vegas. I’ve had a couple of drinks in that town!”
