Barcelona need nine points from their remaining six games to be absolutely certain of winning a 26th La Liga title, although they’re likely to require even less than that given the inconsistent form of their nearest domestic challengers, Atletico Madrid.
So Ernesto Valverde’s side are likely to have secured the Spanish championship ahead of their May clashes with Liverpool in the Champions League and Valencia in the final of the Copa del Rey.
There were high hopes for Real Sociedad in the summer following the appointment of Asier Garitano, who had taken Leganes into both La Liga and the semis of the Copa del Rey for the first time in the club’s history. They didn’t last, however, and the side were languishing in 15th place when Garitano was dismissed on Boxing Day.
La Real’s fortunes have improved since he was replaced by Imanol Alguacil, who spent eight seasons with the club as a player. They’ve risen to 10th, but with both relegation and European qualification now looking very unlikely, Alguacil’s team might not have too much play for here.
