Through two games, the Detroit Pistons have been in way over their heads. Will homecourt help give them a toehold against the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 3?

Calling the Pistons a longshot doesn’t quite do their situation justice. Such is life when you’re a No. 8 seed, playing the best team in the NBA, without your own best player. FiveThirtyEight’s project models give the Pistons just a 20 percent chance of winning Game 3 at home and less than a one percent chance of digging themselves out of an 0-2 hole to advance past the Milwaukee Bucks.

If the Pistons were going to win Game 3, it would have to happen like this:

Luke Kennard would have to catch fire. He’s been one of the few bright spots for Detroit in this series with his combination of shooting and savvy work as a secondary creator.

The Andre Drummond-Reggie Jackson pick-and-roll would have to use a time machine. When this duo first teamed up, they looked like one of the better combinations in the league. Jackson is not the same player and Drummond has receded behind Blake Griffin but if they get a rhythm, find a soft spot in the Bucks defense and really lean into it, Detroit could have a consistent source of offense and force adjustments.

The Bucks would need an outlier bad shooting performance. Giannis Antetokounmpo makes them special but they’re vulnerable if the supporting cast all falls apart together. Giannis isn’t going to score 100 by himself (at least we don’t think he will).
