The Jazz came up with a creative strategy to defend James Harden and the Rockets. It’s been a disaster but can they come up with a solution in Game 3?

The Jazz’s extreme defensive strategy on James Harden has gotten most of the attention in their two losses to start this series, but their offense has been at least as problematic. They’re averaging just 93.5 points per 100 possessions, down from 110.2 in the regular season. Donovan Mitchell is shooting 32.4 percent from the field and 26.7 percent on 3-pointers. Ricky Rubio has taken the second-most shots on the team and Joe Ingles and Jae Crowder have combined to make just 4-of-22 3-pointers. Even if Utah rolls back their unusual defense and relies on the formula that made them so dominant at that end during the regular season, they’ll still need to figure out how to score if they’re going to back in the series.

For Houston, Harden has been absolutely exquisite, masterfully orchestrating everything. He’s averaged 30.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 10.0 assists across the first two games, shooting 43.5 percent on 3-pointers. Eric Gordon, P.J. Tucker and Chris Paul have all been playing well and, with confidence building on defense, the Rockets are looking increasingly dangerous as a dark horse challenger in the West. All of that, of course, presumes they can keep things rolling as the series moves to Utah.
