Being the Elite recap for April 22, 2019: Dead Friend 1
By Matt Black
A weekly recap of the hit YouTube series Being the Elite, starring the Young Bucks, Kenny Omega Cody and the roster of All Elite Wrestling.
Being the Elite opens up this week at Kenny Omega’s home in Winnipeg. He is waiting for someone and it turns out to be Cody. Omega lets him in while Cody asks why they couldn’t have just done this one the phone. Omega said it’s too important and the two of them sit down to talk.
The whole meeting comes down to the whole Librarian problem. Omega and Cody both want Leva Bates as the Librarian while the Young Bucks and Christopher Daniels want Peter Avalon. They agree to make a pact and overrule the others and make Bates the official Librarian. They go as far as to call her and make the signing official.
After the 8-bit opening, however, Daniels and Matt Jackson find Avalon and they tell him that he is the man for the job. Avalon says he’s in and calls himself “All Elite Pete.” He also makes a joke about the million dollar contract Cody offered him several episodes ago and Daniels and Matt tell him that Cody isn’t the money guy, but that they will get the contract sorted and make him the official Librarian.
Afterwards, we are taken to Sammy Guevara’s mother’s house where he shows up to pick up a package and he hooks her up with a t-shirt. She seems to be thankful for it until he leaves and then she cuts a promo on him saying it’s not even an official AEW shirt or in her size. She says there’s a reason he’s not her favorite son.
As she keeps ranting we see Nick Jackson watching the footage and says he feels bad for Guevara because even his mom hates him. Matt comes into the room and he admits to Nick that Jericho’s voicemail to him was about how he and Nick should break up. Nick lets Matt know that Jericho’s voice mail to him said the exact same thing. They said they don’t understand why people keep trying to split them up.
The Bucks say that they want to remind everyone that they are still a team, and to show everyone that they aren’t just great Executive Vice Presidents but they are also still the best tag team in the world. Speaking of tag teams, Nick shows Matt a video of the tag team Private Party that they referenced on last week’s show from the East Coast, calling them the future of the business.
Next, the show cuts to a training montage for Joey Ryan where he believes he’s being talked to by the Candice LeRae doll that was in the previous episode. She tells him to look out, and he superkicks someone who looked to be planning to attack him.
It ends with Ryan sitting in the corner of the ring looking tough and seemingly having found new confidence within himself. It will be interesting to see where things go with this story as AEW still hasn’t officially announced Ryan as part of their roster despite him appearing on Being the Elite on a near-weekly basis.
We then go back to Omeg,a who is on the phone and has clearly lost his mind. He’s going mad with his power to spend money as he is ordering the F14 Tomcat that Tom Cruise flew in Top Gun. Between this and all the money they have Omega spending on FyterFest, it will be curious to see if this leads to the other EVPs trying to cut him out power somewhere down the line.
After that, the cameras head to Daniels, Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky talking about their Double or Nothing after party on the phone and doing a take of the old Budweiser “What’s up!?!” commercials using the term SCU instead. It’s the typical silly stuff from this trio and if you like their gimmick you’ll like this segment as well.
Sky tries to call Matt but Matt sends it to voicemail, and Matt notices another voicemail from a credit card company calling to check on validations for the ridiculous purchases that Omega has made. Matt loses his mind and tries to call Omega, but he’s busy on the phone spending more money and he sends Matt to voicemail.
Matt tries to call Nick but Nick declines the call, too. Matt starts getting frustrated, but Hangman Page calls him, and Matt answers. Matt questions Page about the potato chip he ate and Page gets very defensive saying it was his only cheat meal in two weeks. Page adds that the bigger problem is that he’s being watched (by PAC) and that he had to move his family.
Unfortunately for Page, Matt was in no mood to care and just asks him if he’s #fullgear ready. Hangman, who is clearly upset, admits that he is not yet full-gear ready with a month to go until Double or Nothing. They end their call and it’s revealed that Page is still being watched inside his new house, which he seems to notice but that’s not entirely confirmed. You’re being kinda creepy PAC! Stop stalking Hangman!
This week’s show ends with Nick saying he’s going to call his old British friend, and that he misses his “mate”. As he calls, we see the contact he’s trying to reach. However, the name on the phone just says “Dead Friend 1.”
That wraps up Being the Elite this week. It seems like the official teaser of “The Villain” Marty Scurll’s arrival in All Elite Wrestling has begun. The only question now is when does his Ring of Honor contract officially expire? There are conflicting reports out there so no one knows for sure. Are you hoping to see the Villain at Double or Nothing? What did you think of this weeks episode? Sound off in the comments below.
