The Oklahoma Sooners currently boast the best college softball team in the country after overtaking UCLA.

As of right now, the difference between the top two ranked college softball teams in the country is a single win. The top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners have a remarkable 41-2 record, barely edging out the No. 2 UCLA Bruins with a 40-2 record.

But it’s not as if these two teams are set aside at some unattainable distance from the rest of the pack. Alabama, with an astonishing 45 wins to their season, is close behind at No. 3. Arizona, the third-ranked team in the most recent RPI standings, sits at No. 4.

And then Florida State, with an overall record of 41-8, rounds out the top 5 teams this week.

Teams on the rise

The Oklahoma State Cowgirls are definitely a team worth keeping an eye on right now. While their in-state rival is the top-ranked team and the Cowgirls currently only sit at 17, Oklahoma State is on a seven-game win streak and takes on Texas Tech this weekend after taking a break this past weekend.

If Oklahoma State finds a way to take down Texas Tech, the Cowgirls and the Sooners will be in for a heated matchup to get the month of May started.

Other teams that have improved lately: North Carolina (The Tar Heels aren’t ranked at the moment, but they did claim a series from Virginia Tech),

Teams sliding down

The Florida Gators could have performed better against the Alabama Crimson Tide this past weekend, but it’s hard to totally knock them for losing to one of the best teams in the country. The Gators were swept at home though, and that’s going to sting a bit.

Florida will have a great chance to get going in the right direction once again this weekend when the Gators take on the Auburn Tigers, a team that is also coming off of a sweep.

Other teams that have struggled lately: LSU (narrowly avoided being swept by Arkansas) and Auburn (swept by Kentucky in embarrassing fashion).
