You’ll see Gamora again in future Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Here’s how Avengers: Endgame makes that possible.
This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.
The fact we’re even talking about Gamora and her fate in Avengers: Endgame is a bit of spoiler itself, but if you don’t want to know any more, please click away. Save yourself. See the movie first. There will be an ad break after this paragraph and then we’re going to get into explaining. You’ve been warned!
Okay, so, Gamora. Gamora died in Avengers: Infinity War and she died before Thanos’ snap so it was widely believed she wouldn’t and couldn’t come back. We all knew Marvel would find away to reverse the snap or otherwise engineer a way to get Spider-Man and Black Panther and everyone else with sequels locked up back in the universe. But Gamora’s fate was a little more up in the air, again on account of the pre-snap death. That Gamora, the Gamora of Infinity War, is still super dead. Like Loki, there is no coming back from that particular death.
However, when their temporal infinity stone scavenger hunt reveals to Thanos what the Avengers are up to, and he follows them through time into the present day, Past Gamora enters the present day battle with Thanos. The prevailing understanding is that this Gamora sticks around, explaining her presence in the upcoming third movie in that particular franchise — though she isn’t seen on the ship when the Guardians pick up Thor, so TBD how that all comes together.
(A reverse Captain America, if you will. Dear sweet Steve decides he is meant to be in the past, where he finally marries and dances with his beloved Peggy.)
For more on the hows and whys, we invite you to see Endgame for yourself. It’s in theaters now, opening Thursday April 25.
