Game of Thrones spoilers: Did Jon Snow’s dragon Rhaegal die?
So many characters died in the Battle of Winterfell, but did Jon Snow’s dragon Rhaegal also die?
The death count was awfully high in “The Long Night”, with Theon, Jorah, Lyanna and the Night King among those who didn’t survive the Battle of Winterfell. Jon and Daenerys were able to survive the battle, although it’s not clear if both their dragons survived too.
During one of the coolest scenes in TV history that saw Dany atop Drogon and Jon atop Rhaegal fighting the Night King on top of Viserion, there was a moment that looked like there could be another dragon death.
Viserion’s claws tried to rip Jon to pieces and off the dragon when Drogon came to the rescue and saved Jon and sent the Night King toppling off his dragon he resurrected. However, during that sequence, Jon’s dragon, Rhaegal, may have also died. The dragon wasn’t seen in the remaining minutes of the episode and fans were in a state of panic wondering about the fate of their beloved dragon.
I come bearing good news, because in the promo trailer for next Sunday’s episode, Rhaegal makes an appearance, so the dragon survived. The show won’t be down to a single dragon. Jon and Dany’s dragons both survived. They can both be dragon riders together in the future and live happily ever after. Provided, both are able to survive the last war with Cersei, Euron, The Golden Company and take the Throne in King’s Landing, and they’ll remain in love too.
I don’t know if my heart could have taken the grief from another dragon death. It was hard enough as it is knowing Viserion died in battle and the Night King resurrected him after he was the one to murder him with a spear toss.
So pour one out for House Mormont, Beric, Theon and the good guys who lost their fight, but remember these dragons have another fight left in them.
