By Conor Dorney
Kansas City Chiefs
Grade: B
Best pick: Juan Thornhill (S, Virginia)
Questionable pick: Darwin Thompson (RB, Utah State)
Sleeper pick: Mecole Hardman (WR, Georgia)
The horrific Tyreek Hill developments make grading the Chiefs’ NFL draft seem a bit trivial at this point, but here we are. Kansas City’s front office will have a whole lot of questions to answer over the coming weeks, the least of which will be this particular draft class. While that situation plays out, however, we’ll focus on how they used their collection of picks.
Adding Frank Clark via trade with Seattle (which is a whole other off-field situation that we won’t get into) allowed Kansas City to focus more on the secondary for this particular draft, starting out with Virginia safety Juan Thornhill. Thornhill was one of my absolute favorite players in this entire class, with outstanding athleticism and turnover production that should translate to the next level. He has excellent instincts in coverage and his background as a cornerback, paired with Tyrann Mathieu, should make them one of the most productive turnover tandems in the NFL next season.
From an on-field perspective, the Chiefs opted to address the Tyreek Hill situation with the selection of Georgia wideout Mecole Hardman. Despite not having much experience at the position, Hardman possesses unique explosiveness and speed on the outside that could develop him into a dynamic deep threat. Putting him in an offense with Patrick Mahomes should provide him plenty of playmaking opportunities in his rookie year and he could wind up posting some of the best numbers of first-year wideout in 2019.
