By Conor Dorney
New York Giants
Grade: D
Best pick: Deandre Baker (CB, Georgia)
Questionable pick: Daniel Jones (QB, Duke)
Sleeper pick: Oshane Ximines (EDGE, Old Dominion)
My oh my, did the New York Football Giants provide for some intriguing draft day television this year. It all began with the shocking (but was it, really?) selection of Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick and ended with everyone still discussing said pick.
The Giants have long been linked to Jones by many (including yours truly), partly due to the Manning connection with Blue Devils head coach David Cutcliffe. But to spend the sixth overall pick on Jones is richer than rich, to say the least. GM Dave Gettleman has already done a less-than-ideal job at explaining his reasoning, including falling in love after a few Senior Bowl series and adding that Jones may sit for three years before becoming the starter. However, you look at it, there are a whole lot of flaws to Jones’ game that could end up making this pick look like a catastrophic whiff a few years down the road.
One position that the Giants did get right during the draft was at cornerback, where there was certainly a need. They traded back into the first round to pick up Georgia’s DeAndre Baker, who some believed was the best cornerback in the class, and added talented Notre Dame defensive back Julian Love in the fourth.
I’m also a big fan of underrated edge prospect Oshane Ximines from Old Dominion, a really talented pass rusher who finds ways to affect opposing offenses even when he isn’t able to create pressure directly. There’s no doubt that the Giants added some talent, but it’s ultimately overshadowed by the glaring reaches that they went for with their first two selections.
