FanDuel PGA: Top Picks – The 2019 Wells Fargo Championship
Welcome to this edition of FanDuel PGA Picks from FantasyCPR.com. Here you will find players to target for this weeks Wells Fargo Championship, which takes place at Quail Hollow Club, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In this article, I will present to you some Fantasy Golf players to consider from each price tier for FanDuel PGA. Some plays will be geared toward cash games, and some for GPP tournaments. Some of course will also technically qualify as both. As we break each play down, I will be sure to specify which type of contests I am targeting that player in.
I will give two players to target from $11K up to the top salary, two targets from the $10K-$11K range, and two from the $9-10K range. After that will come my top value plays from the $8-9K range, along with a couple of GPP flyers to consider for tournament play. Last but certainly not least, I will end the article the ever popular sample lineup we like to do here at FantasyCPR.
I used to give a quick recap here from the previous week, but with MLB in full go, I am forced to scrap that portion of this article in an attempt to shorten things up. If you are ever curious as to how things worked out, my picks along with the other top experts in the field are tracked at Daily Overlay.
We are looking at a top-heavy field this week, but thankfully we have a very solid amount of value to sift through. What I did notice right away if anything, is that this is without a doubt a “stars and scrubs” type of week for not only tournament play, but for cash play as well.
The mid-range from $9-10K looks very thin, and when go below $9K, there are legitimately five or even six guys in that value tier that not only should make the cut, they could very well compete through the weekend. Without further ado, let get right to the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship picks for FanDuel.
FanDuel PGA: Top Tier Picks: ($11,000+)
Rory McIlroy – $12,500 – (Cash/GPP)
As I start to build my GPP lineups, one thing I am noticing right away, is that despite the huge price tag here, McIlroy is priority number one this week. I can’t say I am going to go all-in, but it will be close. There are some value guys that could pop this week, and of all the studs in this field, McIlroy is in not only in the best form, he also has the best history of the bunch here at Quail Hollow.
A two-time champion with victories in 2010 and 2015, McIlroy has notched six top-tens over the last nine years. That kind of consistency here, along with what he has done so far this year, is a combination you will not find with anyone else in this field.
McIlroy T-21 at the Masters in his last action, which snapped a streak of six-straight finishes in sixth place or better. With the way it shapes it up this week, start your cash game and tournament lineups right here with McIlroy. The value is there.
Phil Mickelson – $11,200 – (GPP)
It’s not too often I find myself playing Phil, let alone recommend him obviously, but Mickelson is about as close to McIlroy here, in the sense that he is coming into Quail Hollow with good history, and in pretty solid form. Of all of our nine options in this price range this week, the riskiest play who will likely be the lowest owned, but is more likely to win than some of these others, is Mickelson.
I think with Hideki Matsuyama slightly cheaper, and Paul Casey just $100 more, Mickelson could go a bit overlooked this week. He did miss two straight cuts before his T-18 at the Masters, so the form is the question here without question. However, the fact that he has come close here so many times and has never won will keep a guy like Phil hungry.
Mickelson was a runner-up in 2010 at the Wells Fargo Championship, and since 2009, he has six total top-five finishes, including his T-5 last year. I am not going too crazy here, but I will likely have 30-40% exposure here in tournament play.
I should add I do love Casey here as well. I think he will be eager to get his poor outing behind him, and I have absolutely no issues going right back here, despite the fact that he single-handedly destroyed my Masters lineups. In DFS, you HAVE to forget about last weeks results, and stick with your process.
***Also Consider: Rickie Fowler $11,600 – Paul Casey $11,300***
FanDuel PGA: Mid Tier Picks: ($10,000 – $11,000)
Lucas Glover – $10,400 – (Cash)
Anyone who runs a model this week will tell you, the Glove fits at Quail Hollow. Glover has had an incredible start to 2019, but he comes into the Wells Fargo Championship off of a missed cut at the RBC Heritage. However, much like Casey, I would not let that fact turn you away this week. Glover has missed three cuts now in nine events, but in the events he has finished, he has been near contention in most.
One thing of note, is that Glover has bounced back nicely from both previous missed cuts. He T-7 at Pebble Beach after missing a cut at the WMPO, and he T-13 at the Valspar after missing the cut at the Players Championship more recently. Despite the somewhat shaky go with the missed cuts, in those nine events thus far this year, he does have six finishes inside the top-15.
Glover is a staple here at Quail Hollow, and is also a past champion here at the Wells Fargo Championship, but that win was way back in 2011. In the last ten years here at Quail Hollow, Glover has been hit or miss on that front as well, with three missed cuts, and three top-10’s. Bottom line for me, I love the way the Glove has bounced-back from his previous missed cuts as of late, and this is chalk I don’t think I will fade this week in cash games.
Sergio Garcia – $10,300 – (GPP)
Garcia remains relatively cheap considering his pedigree and recent play. The 39-year-old Spaniard has not teed it up here at Quail Hollow very much over the course of his career, and the fact that he has slipped a bit over the last few weeks has me thinking this has the makings of a fantastic leverage spot.
His ownership should be way low this week, but I guess you really never know. I don’t really put much credence into last weeks Zurich Classic of New Orleans, but I guess it is worth noting that Garcia and teammate Tommy Fleetwood were lights out, finishing in second place at 23-under par.
Prior to that however, Garcia missed his first cut of 2019 at the Masters, and struggled on the weekend to a T-54 finish at the Valspar Championships. Now that we have this bounce-back at a team event, does it count? For $10,300, I am willing to take a few chances in finding out. Glover and even Charles Howell will likely be way more popular here, and out of those three who do you think has the best shot to actually win? I like all three guys obviously, but I love this Garcia pivot.
***Also Consider: Webb Simpson $10,800 – Charles Howell $10,100***
FanDuel PGA: Low Tier Picks: ($9,000 – $10,000)
Byeong-Hun An – $9,800 – (Cash)
He finally missed a cut at the RBC Heritage, and it came on a week where he was finally super chalky. Welcome to PGA DFS! This is the perfect week to not let recency bias bother you, because we have a few guys that have let us down over the last couple of weeks that are great plays once again, and that continues here with Benny An.
Because he T-7 at the Valero Texas Open which gave him two top-tens in his last three tournaments, and the missed cut two weeks ago will be fresh on everyone’s mind, he should go slightly overlooked. The fact of the matter as always is, if An can putt, he can contend.
Anytime he is under $10K, which he still is, I believe he is in play. I won’t have much An, and although I believe him to be cash safe, he does not fit my cash build this week. I will have some exposure in GPP play though, albeit not very much I am guessing.
Jhonattan Vegas – $9,500 – (GPP)
His history is not great here at Quail Hollow, but I finally feel like Vegas is back to offering solid value for his price tag, considering how well he is swinging it this year. His best finish here was last year when he T-45 at +1, and the only other time he made a cut including the 2017 PGA Championship here was 2016. Vegas finished T-53rd that year. All in all, he has missed five cuts in seven tournaments here.
Ok so the course history is daunting, but Vegas continues to roll with six straight made cuts. Of course his most impressive finish was his T-3 at the Players Championship considering the strenght of the field, but Vegas was almost equally solid at the Valero Texas Open where he T-30th, and at the Corales Championship, where he T-26. I am not trusting Jhonny V in cash this week, but this is a fair salary for GPP play.
***Also Consider: Nobody else in this range!…***
FanDuel PGA: Top Value Picks: (Below $9,000)
Kyoung-Hoon Lee – $8,900 – (GPP)
27-year-old South Korean Kyoung-Hoon Lee was cruising along, missing just one cut in his last seven events. The worst part was, that he missed the cut at the Valspar, in a week where he was coming in off a T-7 at the Honda Classic. Lee has now made three straight cuts, with his best finish coming at the Valero Texas Open where he T-14.

For me, as long he keeps making more cuts than he misses, and as long he is under $9K, he remains GPP viable. This is a tough course, but Lee is showing week in and week out that he can hold his own. I am going to play him in cash, but I think he is more suited as a traditional GPP play. I will have three guys in this range in my cash lineup this week, and it starts with Lee.
Roberto Castro – $8,200 – (Cash)
Before I talk about Castro, wow this range is loaded! Aaron Wise is a bomber whose style of play really fits what it takes to do well here, as he showed last year when he T-2 in his debut. The Postman, J.T. Poston, also has been playing well all season, and this is a home game for him. I have been playing the Postman a ton this year, and now that we have a narrative, I am on him big time once again.
But now let’s talk about Roberto Castro who is even cheaper than the above mentioned, and although Castro hasn’t played Quail Hollow much over the last five years, he has been downright impressive when he has. 2016 was his last appearance, and he damn near won the thing, losing in a playoff to James Hahn, as the duo held off Rose, Rory, and Phil all just a stroke or two behind them.
Prior to that he T-8 in 2014, which gives him two top-tens in a five-year span in his only two tries. It doesn’t get much better than that, when you also consider that Castro has missed just one cut in his last six events, and two total this season in 11 events. He hasn’t had a good Sunday since the Desert Classic so curb your expectations a bit, but unless he is off his game, I expect him to play well here once again.
***Also Consider: J.T. Poston $8,600 – Aaron Wise $8,500***
***Bonus GPP Flyers: Harold Varner III $7,900 – Robert Streb $7,400***
