1. Win the lottery

Before the Knicks get a chance to make their formal pitches to Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant or any other potential free agents, ping-pong balls will go a long way towards changing the future of their franchise. The Knicks have a 14 percent chance of winning the top pick in the draft and the rights to select Zion Williamson. He is the one true surefire impact player in this draft and he could be a game-changer for the Knicks regardless of what happens in free agency.

If the Knicks can land Zion, he’s good enough to help Durant and Irving compete right now or be used as trade bait for a third star like Anthony Davis to really open the window of contention. That scenario also puts them on multiple timelines, going big now and being set up for Zion to take over as Kyrie and Durant age out.

Next. Felipe Lopez: The last king of New York. dark

If the Knicks don’t win the lottery they’ll have their choice of question marks to add to a roster of existing question marks. There are lots of ways that scenario could still work for them but getting Zion is the easiest path walk.
