The undercard for Canelo Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs is now set, and the fighters competing in it participated in a press conference.

Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs will do battle to unify the WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight championships, but the undercard for their event is now set.

All of the undercard’s participants participated in a press conference held on May 2.

Capping off the undercard will be a super lightweight contest featuring Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Mauricio Herrera.

At a perfect 12-0, the 21-year-old top prospect Ortiz has finished every single one of his opponents thus far, and he hopes to continue that streak, as well as earn a crack at gold, against Herrera.

“I’m more than ready for this fight,” Ortiz said. “Mauricio has never been stopped. I’ve stopped everybody. I’m more than ready to go into this fight. I’m prepared. Mauricio has been in there with Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez, who I do believe he beat, and in my eyes, he is a world champion.”

Having gone through ups-and-downs in his career, Herrera, the former interim WBA super lightweight champ, has gone 4-5 in his last nine, which included a controversial failed WBA/WBC title bid against Danny Garcia in 2014. He lost the interim title later that year against Jose Benavidez Jr. in another controversial outing.

Herrera said those losses left him questioning his motivation for boxing, but he’s slowly gained it back.

“This kid Ortiz has 12 wins and 12 knockouts, undefeated,” Herrera said. “On Saturday I’m really motivated. I do want to bring my career back. I trained really hard. You’re going to see I’m not an old lion. And if I’m an old lion, I’m a hungry lion. Come Saturday, you’re going to see a great show. Don’t tune me out. Saturday, you’ll see the Maestro comeback.”

The Canelo-Jacobs undercard will also feature unbeaten WBO International super featherweight champ Lamont Roach Jr. facing Jonathan Oquendo with Roach’s title and the WBO-NABO super featherweight strap both on the line. The undercard opens with a battle between two one-loss super featherweight contenders — Joseph Diaz Jr. and Freddy Fonseca.
