Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone defeated Al Iaquinta in the main event of UFC Ottawa.

After not fighting for nearly a year, Iaquinta had an eventful 2018. To start, he was matched up against fellow top ranked contender Paul Felder at the highly anticipated pay-per-view event, UFC 223. Due to some unexpected changes, however, Iaquinta was called to take on current lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event.

Iaquinta lost the fight to Nurmagomedov by unanimous decision, but put up a great fight on short notice. To close out the year, Iaquinta met a familiar foe in Kevin Lee in his second straight main event outing at UFC on FOX: Iaquinta vs. Lee 2. He won by of unanimous decision and was then scheduled to take on Cerrone in May.

Moving back down to lightweight after a few years at welterweight, Cerrone took on Alexander Hernandez at UFC Brooklyn in January. Cerrone won the fight by way of second round technical knockout.

Cerrone entertained a fight with former two-division champion Conor McGregor upon his return to the Octagon, but Cerrone has moved past the potential match in favor of the best route to the lightweight championship, starting with Iaquinta.

At the end of five rounds, Cerrone was awarded the unanimous decision victory. Here are some of the best Twitter reactions to the fight between Iaquinta and Cerrone:

In his-post fight interview, Cerrone says he is “on a mission” to the title. Although Cerrone said he has moved away from the McGregor fight, he teased the fight again for International Fight Week in July.
