Real Madrid face Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, May 5. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
In third place behind La Liga champions Barcelona by 18 points, this has been a season to forget for Real Madrid, which are already mentioned in major transfer rumors for big stars like Eden Hazard, Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba. Likewise, the 2018-19 campaign hasn’t been kind to Villarreal either, as they sit in 14th place with just 40 points despite having as many losses as multiple top-10 sides.
On their home turf, this game is about pride for Real, who are safe favorites in this match. A win, however, isn’t guaranteed, especially with Karim Benzema at risk of missing the remainder of the season. Mariano Diaz, a big summer signing from Lyon at striker, could feature in the starting lineup for Benzema, and it would be interesting to see how he plays with wingers Gareth Bale and Marco Asensio in Madrid’s attack.
Villarreal will be buoyed by the center midfield partnership of veteran Santi Cazorla and the returning Vicente Iborra, who was previously suspended. Cazorla is still the star man at the age of 34 and is Villarreal’s best chance-creator, leading the team with 10 assists.
Though Real come into this game at the Bernabéu out of form, having won just one of their last four games, and are facing a Villarreal team that is on fire after previously feeling the threat of relegation, Madrid have been stalwarts at home. The heat will be on the current attackers to produce with Benzema, who had 21 goals this season, out of the lineup, but perhaps Bale and Mariano will have moments of brilliance while playing with a point to prove on Matchday 36.
