What is the Met Gala?
By Amy Kaplan
Here’s everything you need to know about the Met Gala.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met as it’s famously called) hosts its yearly Costume Institute Gala where designers, artists and celebrities from all genres come together to celebrate the museum’s next installation. But really, it’s to show off all the fabulous fashion on one of the most famous red carpets in entertainment.
The actual gala was started in 1948 by publicist Eleanor Lambert. It was originally called “The Party of the Year” and let’s be honest … it kinda still is.
But what actually happens at the gala?
Here’s a breakdown of events:
- Cocktail hour
- Celebs walk the famous red carpet
- Exclusive first-look at the new exhibit
- More drinks
- Sit down dinner
- Dancing
Though nothing is official, Lady Gaga and/or Harry Styles, who are co-chairs this year, are rumored to be performing.
This year’s theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion” which was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp” and really who knows what these amazing designers will come up with this year.
This year’s exhibition is designed by Belgian scenographer and lighting designer Jan Versweyveld. He’s best known his work with David Bowie on “Lazarus.”
According to the Independent, “[The exhibit] will be split in two parts. One will look at the origins of camp, which Bolton will explore through Victorian slang, the Stonewall riots” the other half will be “contemporary designers’ interpretations the word ‘camp’, looking into the creative inspirations from Balenciaga and Miuccia Prada.”
The whole red carpet can be watched live starting on Monday, May 6, 2019, at 7 pm ET. The whole carpet will be aired on E! as wells as on Vogue’s Twitter, Youtube and Facebook social media accounts.
