Here’s how you can live stream the 2019 Met Gala online and see all the camp-themed looks from fashion’s biggest night.
The Met Gala is not televised, but luckily, what everyone cares about (the red carpet!) is. Here’s how you can watch the arrivals in real time.
This year’s theme is camp, drawn from the exhibit “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” itself drawn from Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, “Notes on Camp.”
As Marie Claire explains, Sontag defined camp in many ways and so too does Costume Institute Curator Andrew Bolton in the New York Times:
"We are going through an extreme camp moment, and it felt very relevant to the cultural conversation to look at what is often dismissed as empty frivolity but can be actually a very sophisticated and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures…Whether it’s pop camp, queer camp, high camp or political camp—Trump is a very camp figure—I think it’s very timely."
While Rihanna’s presence is still frustratingly unconfirmed, the 2019 hosts will be Lady Gaga, Serena Williams and Harry Styles so the event is still absolutely must-see. Celebrities walk the famed Met steps, before attending a dinner with special performances. (You may remember it from Ocean’s Eight.) But really, with such a fashion-focused event, it’s all about the red carpet anyways.
