5 most overpaid quarterbacks in the NFL
4. Nick Foles
The Jaguars were desperate to secure an upgrade over Blake Bortles and they almost certainly found one by signing Foles away from the Eagles. Foles has a Super Bowl MVP on his resume, but that doesn’t qualify him to earn $22 million this season.
A more palatable salary for Foles would have been somewhere in the range of $15 million. It’s unclear exactly why Jacksonville officials felt like they needed to blow away the “competition” by giving Foles such a rich contract. Team officials claim it’s because they wanted the locker room to understand he was the team’s starter, but it’s highly unlikely any one on the team would have believed in Cody Kessler’s claim to the position.
The good news for Foles is that the Jaguars offense should still be predicated on the run game in 2019. Leonard Fournette isn’t the most dynamic running back in the league, but he does have the talent and size to bludgeon opposing defenders into submission.
In other words, Foles isn’t going to be asked to carry this offense on a week-to-week basis. He should have the luxury to work primarily off play action. If he can complete passes at a high percentage and keep the chains moving he’ll look like a success in Jacksonville. Even if he achieves that, he’s still going to be significantly overpaid.
