With two games remaining in the Bundesliga season, the race for fourth place and the final Champions League spot is wide open. Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen are tied for fourth with 54 points. However, both Borussia Monchengladbach, Wolfsburg, and Hoffenheim are within three points. On Saturday, Leverkusen will try to move closer to a top-four spot when they host Schalke at BayArena. The Royal Blues have had an awful season after finishing second last season. Schalke are 15th and will finish in the bottom half of the table.
Leverkusen destroyed Eintracht last weekend, winning 6-1. The victory gave Leverkusen an edge in the race for the final Champions League spot. Peter Bosz’s club have won four straight games and are playing the best of any of the teams competing for fourth. Kai Havertz scored his team-best 15th goal of the season last weekend. The 19-year-old has emerged as the best young German players. Havertz and Kevin Volland will be the focus of Leverkusen’s attack on Saturday.
Schalke have been the most disappointing team in the Bundesliga this season. The Royal Blues have struggled to score goals and keep the ball out of their own net. Mark Uth was a complete transfer bust, scoring only two goals before getting hurt. Daniel Caligiuri and Breel Embolo are both finishing the season on a strong note. Caligiuri has scored three goals and an assist in his last three games, while Embolo has a goal and two assists.
