MLB rumors: 5 players Red Sox needs to trade for
5. Asdrubal Cabrera, IF Texas Rangers
This one is more about being proactive and preparing for ‘the worst-case scenario’ this summer.
Yes, there will be players that comeback from the Injured List soon. Brock Holt is nearing a rehab assignment, and his left-handed bat and position versatility will be a welcomed sight for Alex Cora.
Tzu-Wei Lin is more of a glove first player, so an upgrade there would be nice. Who knows what Dustin Pedroia will have when he comes back, as he looked very out of sorts in his six games this season after battling an array of injuries in the previous years.
Therefore, getting another bench bat that can still play three to four times a week if necessary, would be a huge plus. Current Texas Rangers infielder Asdrubal Cabrera should be that guy.
Cabrera doesn’t come with a high-price tag, nor would it require blue-chip prospects to acquire the now 33-year old. At this point, his shortstop playing days are probably behind him, but he can play there in a pinch and play second base and third base well.
The club already has Eduardo Nunez to sort of play in this role, but outside of that the team’s depth has been tested. Michael Chavis has come up and played very well but getting a switch-hitting infielder to take some of those reps would help Boston be a more well-rounded, and much deeper, ball club.
