Tate Martell didn’t feel welcome at Ohio State after Justin Fields transferred in from Georgia and was basically told to leave, so he did.

Tate Martell waited his turn behind Dwayne Haskins and J.T. Barrett at Ohio State with the hope that he’d be the starter in 2019. That plan was disrupted when former No. 2 overall recruit, Justin Fields transferred from Georgia and was granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA. That left Martell out of a job, and as he tells Andrea Adelson of ESPN, out of a school.

Martell tells Adelson he was told he’d be better off looking at another school to pursue a starting quarterback job. Basically, he was cut and told he wouldn’t be welcomed back and Fields would be handed the starting quarterback job.

"“Martell says he was told toward the end of the season he would be better off finding another school. Shortly after former No. 1 overall recruit Justin Fields announced he was transferring to Ohio State, Martell told the world he would transfer himself.”"

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day who took over for the retired Urban Meyer should be commended for being straight-forward with Martell and giving him a chance to find an opportunity elsewhere. Often, coaches lie to players to protect themselves. Ohio State could have used Martell as an insurance policy in case Fields got hurt or looked totally out of place in Day’s offense.

While rival programs may look at Ohio State as being cold for telling Martell to leave, it’s the right move for both Ohio State and Martell who transferred to Miami. Martell is eligible to play this year too, so he’s not being penalized for this move. He has a great chance to win the starting quarterback job considering the personnel and depth chart with the Canes, but nothing is guaranteed, other than the opportunity, which wasn’t going to be there at Ohio State.
