Penn State QB Tommy Stevens reunites with Joe Moorhead at Mississippi State
By Ethan Lee
Former Penn State quarterback Tommy Stevens will be greeted in Starkville by a familiar face as he officially transfers to be a Mississippi State Bulldog.
As of today, Tommy Stevens is no longer a Nittany Lion. The former Penn State quarterback is making his way down to Starkville, Mississippi, to be reunited with Joe Moorhead, a former Penn State offensive coordinator, and finish out his college career as a Mississippi State Bulldog.
Earlier today, Stevens announced on Twitter that he has officially transferred to Mississippi State to play for the Bulldogs. MSU then confirmed the move with a press release of their own.
That could potentially be very good news for Mississippi State football fans given that the Bulldogs struggled on offense throughout the 2018 season. Now, a quarterback who is familiar with Moorhead’s schemes will be added to the roster.

However, Stevens doesn’t have extensive playing experience.
In his time at Penn State, Stevens completed just 24 passes on 41 attempts, throwing for 304 yards and four touchdowns against a single interception. Stevens also added 506 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.
In terms of total production, Stevens is behind Keytaon Thompson, who has played in a backup role for the Bulldogs over the past couple of seasons behind Nick Fitzgerald. Thompson has played in 16 games, throwing for 846 yards and eight touchdowns against three interceptions while also rushing for 672 yards and 10 touchdowns.
But the biggest knock so far on Thompson has been his lack of accuracy when it comes to passing. Thompson has completed just 47.6 percent of his passes in his career.
The Bulldogs’ quarterback battle just got significantly more interesting as neither Stevens or Thompson have appeared to be spectacular passers but both offer plenty of athleticism at the position.
As Moorhead tries to turn Mississippi State into a possible title contender, he’ll need a quarterback who could be more reliable than that. Nick Fitzgerald, MSU’s starting quarterback for the past few seasons, wasn’t all that consistent when it came to completing passes and he completed just over 54 percent of his passes in his career.
It’ll be intriguing to see how this quarterback battle pans out and whether it will lead to any of the quarterbacks currently on Mississippi State’s roster transferring away from Starkville.
