MLB Fantasy May 19: Trent Thornton and Other Streamers
By Bill Pivetz
Which MLB Fantasy starting pitcher should you take a chance on to stream for your fantasy baseball team on May 19?
The list of starting pitchers for May 19 is a mixed bag. There are some aces like Noah Syndergaard and Chris Sale but the majority of them are back-end MLB Fantasy arms. With Week 7 coming to a close, which of these starters should you stream for your fantasy baseball team?
Of the 28 starting pitchers listed, two teams haven’t named a starter, 12 of them are owned in at least 50 percent of ESPN leagues. That leaves 16 arms that are available in the majority of leagues. However, not all of them are worth a streaming spot.
Guys like Tyler Skaggs, Drew Smyly and Brad Peacock should not be in a startling lineup. Some of them have pitched well but the matchup isn’t good while in Skaggs’ case, it’s the other way around.

The three pitchers I have listed here have both things going for them, good string of performances and a favorable matchup. Here are my Sunday streaming options.
Trent Thornton, @CWS
I’ve mentioned Thornton as a waiver add before. If this matchup against the White Sox doesn’t do it for you, then I don’t know what else to say. Thornton has 46 strikeouts in 43.0 innings this season.
Though, his walk rate is a littel high at 11.4 percent. The White Sox are ninth in team strikeouts and 12th in batting average. There are some power hitters in the lineup but not enough to string together a dangerous outing for Thornton.
Mike Fiers, @DET
Fiers followed up his no-hitter with a five-inning, one-run outing. He struck out four, walked three and gave up two hits in the game against Seattle. The matchup against Detroit is a little better than that.
The Tigers are hitting .221 with 35 home runs this season. Ronny Rodriguez leads the team with six home runs and 17 RBIs. No other batter has more than three home runs. While unlikely, Fiers could throw his third no-hitter in this game.
Reynaldo Lopez, vs. TOR
On the other side of the field against the Blue Jays is Lopez. He’s had four quality starts in his last five games. The one non-QS game was against the Red Sox. Lopez has pitched well against his AL Central opponents.
The Blue Jays are hitting .220 with 413 strikeouts and 163 runs scored, all in the bottom third of the league.
Lopez is allowing more fly balls and home runs this season than any season, 54.8 FB rate and 12.5 HR/FB rate. Though, his swinging strike rate is at a career high and his first-pitch strike rate is in line with his career average.
These names may not jump out at you when scrolling through the waiver wire but they are good enough for a one-game spot on your roster.
