5 teams that should sign Gerald McCoy
With Gerald McCoy finally hitting the market after getting released by Tampa Bay, the star defensive tackle could be a tremendous fit for several teams.
The long saga of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has come to an end. The Bucs parted ways with the star lineman due to salary cap concerns, unwilling to pay the 31-year old $13 million each of the next three years.
McCoy now hits the open market as an incredibly productive player, having recorded a combined 12 sacks over the past two years, and there will be no shortage of teams looking to add him to their defensive line. Let’s break down five potential landing spots for the six-time Pro Bowler, beginning with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
5. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars have a loaded defense, but they do need some additional depth on the front line. Although Marcell Dareus has been very productive at one defensive tackle spot, the Jaguars were forced to release Malik Jackson earlier in the offseason due to cap issues.
Jackson landed in Philadelphia, and the Jaguars haven’t really filled his spot on the defense, with veteran Abry Jones currently projected to start opposite Dareus on the inside. McCoy would offer a massive upgrade to the Jaguars at that position, creating additional pressure in the middle of the pocket, which is key in a division headlined by Andrew Luck and Deshaun Watson.
Jacksonville would be appealing to McCoy as well since he wouldn’t have to relocate his family too far, with the two cities only separated by a three hour drive.
