3. Los Angeles Chargers

The pattern of good teams with a need for depth along the defensive front continues with the Los Angeles Chargers. On paper, the Chargers have a solid defensive line, with Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram as bookend pass rushers on the outside.

The interior is a bit more questionable, as nose tackle Brandon Mebane is 34 years old and 2018 third-round pick Justin Jones didn’t make a huge impact in his rookie campaign. The Chargers were clearly concerned about their depth at the defensive tackle spot enough to take Notre Dame’s Jerry Tillery with their first-round pick, adding another talented player to the mix.

Asking Tillery to be a difference-maker right away is a tall order, but McCoy is a player with a track record of production throughout his career. Putting McCoy on the inside of Bosa and Ingram would be a nightmare matchup for opposing offensive lines, who would have to leave one of the three elite pass rushers with one-on-one matchups.

The Chargers are also under immense pressure to win now before Philip Rivers begins to decline. Rivers has been one of the more underrated quarterbacks in the league for a long time, and getting the Chargers to a Super Bowl would help bolster his Hall of Fame case.

The biggest roadblock for the Chargers is Kansas City and league MVP Patrick Mahomes, so improving the defense should be the order of the day in Los Angeles. McCoy is the best defender on the market right now and he happens to fit an area of need for the Chargers.
