2019 Charles Schwab Challenge: DraftKings DFS Picks
Yet again, Colonial Country Club has a new sponsor for their tournament this year. What was previously known as the Fort Worth and DEAN & DELUCA Invitational, Colonial CC is now playing host to the Charles Schwab Challenge here in 2019. Just a week following the PGA Championship, this field is surprisingly stacked.
Last year’s champion, Justin Rose is one of the seven players in this field who find themselves inside the OWGR’s top-13. The others being Francesco Molinari, Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm, and Paul Casey.
Looking back at the oddball players who finished inside the top-20 at Colonial last year, they all had similar stats in which they excelled in. Even if the form wasn’t exactly there, the shorter, straighter hitters found their way to the top of the leaderboard.
Two key stats that correlated with each other when analyzing the players atop the 2018 leaderboard at Colonial CC were Driving Accuracy, and SG: Putting. Ben Crane is a prime example of this finishing T8 here last year and was inside the top-40 in both Driving Accuracy, and SG: Putting. Another stat that popped up was Par 4 Scoring, which was a bit more relevant than Par 4 Birdie or Better Percentage, but both can be considered for the Charles Schwab Challenge this week. With 12 Par 4s on the scorecard, both of these stats can be weighed when deciding upon your player pool this week. The final key stat I will be accounting for here is SG: Approach the Green.
2019 Charles Schwab Challenge: DraftKings DFS Picks
Justin Rose leads the way in DraftKings pricing this week at $11,400 in his title defense for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Rose, along with Jordan Spieth ($10,900), Rickie Fowler ($10,500), and Xander Schauffele ($10,000) all played the weekend at the PGA Championship, while Jon Rahm ($11,200) missed the cut.
With value further down the board, this range is very affordable and elite players do succeed here. Last year, four of the five players priced above $10,000 made the cut, three of which, finished inside the top-15 (one being the winner, Justin Rose).
Jon Rahm $11,200
The fact that Rahm missed the cut last week at the PGA Championship almost makes him more appealing to me. Rahm hasn’t missed back to back cuts since June of 2017, his first full season on the PGA Tour. While his stats don’t exactly jump off the page, he still ranks inside the fields top-30 in both SG: Approach the Green, and Par 4 Birdie or Better. When looking at Par 4 Scoring (as opposed to birdie or better), Rahm is tied for second in the field.
One would think the poor outing at Bethpage Black this past week would drive his ownership down, but that is not the case here. Rahm has an outstanding course history. In two career tries, Rahm has a pair of top five finishes. In his debut at Colonial Country Club in 2017, Rahm finished in a tie for second, which he followed up last year with a T5.
Alternate Option: Rickie Fowler ($10,500) ranks top-10 in the field in both Par 4 Birdie or better, and SG: Putting. Finished T14 here last season.

Bryson DeChambeau $9,400
Add him to the list of players to go after following a missed cut at the PGA Championship. This is not a profile that I am narrowing it down to, but I believe the missed cut did decrease DeChambeau’s price point this week. Bryson is still looking for his first top-10 on the PGA Tour finish since the Sony Open, back in January. He has missed two consecutive cuts, which might have some fading him this week, but is in a nice spot to bounce back.
In his first try at Colonial last year, he made the cut, finishing T42. DeChambeau also shows up on the stats we are looking at as he is inside the fields top-25 in both Par 4 Birdie or Better, and Driving Accuracy. He finished 15th in both Par 4 stat categories last year, as well. Take it as you will, but DeChambeau also ranks fourth in SG: Putting on the European Tour, where he has played some of his best golf this season.
Paul Casey $9,300
At this price point, Paul Casey just seems like a must play. As popular as it gets in the DFS golf world, Casey is viewed as a safety net for cash games. When considering him this week for the Charles Schwab Challenge, Casey checks all the boxes.
First off, they key stats are present. Casey is inside the fields top-10 in both SG: Approach the Green, and Driving Accuracy. He fits the mold of previous winners and does have solid a course history at Colonial. Casey has played here with consistency missing just one cut with three finishes T13 or better. Casey is a very affordable option in cash games.

At the top of this $8,000 range, we find red-hot Jason Kokrak ($8,900), who should be an extremely popular play on DraftKings this week. Though Kokrak is playing outstanding golf as of late, it has to end at some point. He has struggled with consistency at Colonial over the years, failing to finish inside of the top-30 in his last four tries here. You are paying for his form.
Same goes for Rory Sabbatini ($8,800). Since his win here at Colonial CC back in 2007, Sabbatini is 6/10 with just one top-10 finish. Again, there are better plays for this price.
Chez Reavie $8,300
Slowly making his way back into relevancy, Chez Reavie makes for a sneaky play at this weeks Charles Schwab Challenge. He made his debut at Colonial back in 2008. Since then, Reavie has made 5/7 cuts with two top-15’s. He is rounding into form with back to back top-20 finishes, which includes his T14 this past week at the PGA Championship.
He showed up on three of the four stats on the spreadsheet that is linked in the first slide. In fact, Reavie was inside the top-20 in SG: Approach the Green, Par 4 Birdie or Better, and Driving Accuracy, where he is the second most accurate off the tee this season. Though $8,300 might seem like a steep price to pay for Reavie, he is a nice cash game play in this range.
Alternate Option: Emiliano Grillo ($8,700) has consecutive top-25 finishes at Colonial CC, with a solo third last season.

Tyrrell Hatton $7,800
It hard to dislike what Tyrrell Hatton brings to the game of golf. It is also hard to talk yourself out of rostering him in this price range. Though he has been far from impressive this season lacking consistency, he is still inside the world’s top-40 golfers. Don’t forget, that it wasn’t too long ago that he was actually inside the OWGR’s top-15.
Hatton did show up on the key stats where he ranked inside the fields top-20 in Par 4 Birdie or Better. He is more of a tournament play at this weeks Charles Schwab Challenge, but is worth a look on DraftKings priced below $8,000.
Jim Furyk $7,300
Just a few weeks back, the norm for Jim Furyk was the $9,000 range. Fast forward to back to back missed cuts, and his price has dropped $2,000. Prior to his two missed cuts, Furyk was on an unbelievable run, with four straight top-25’s which included two top-10’s.
Now we are getting back to a course that Furyk is familiar with. Playing at Colonial 21 times in since 1995, Furyk has missed the cut just five times. Of the 16 times he has made the cut here, Furyk has finished inside the top-10 seven times. Let’s put the history aside for a second. The 49-year-old ranks first on tour in Driving Accuracy, and fifth in the field in SG: Approach. This looks like a spot for Furyk to get back on track. He is a great value on DraftKings at just $7,300.
Alternate Options: Zach Johnson ($7,900), Pat Perez ($7,700), Sungjae Im ($7,700), Daniel Berger ($7,600), and Corey Conners ($7,200).

Michael Thompson $6,800
At first glance, this looks like the best value play on the board. Thompson got off to a scorching start. He is playing the best golf of his career this season with already with four top-10’s. He hasn’t had the best of luck as of late, but this course suits his game well. Playing at Colonial last year, Thompson finished T32 and has made two consecutive cuts. He also had a T10 back in 2014, so he is familiar with how the course plays.

When looking at the key stats, Thompson ranks inside the fields top-20 in both Driving Accuracy, and SG: Putting. He also ranks inside the top-50 on tour in Par 4 Scoring Average. While Thompson has slowed his roll over the past few weeks, look for him to get back on track this week at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Scott Langley $6,100
Nobody priced this low is a guarantee, but Scott Langley is by far the most attractive play when digging this deep. The form is not all there, but he has contended a few times this season with a pair of top-15 finishes at the Desert Classic, and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. Last years leaderboard had names near the top that are not very well-known, so players priced near the bottom can contend.
Langley also rated out well on the key stats. He ranks inside the top-35 on the PGA Tour this season in both Driving Accuracy, and SG: Putting. Langley hasn’t played at Colonial CC since 2016 (the last time he had his tour card) where he missed the cut, but he had made it in his two prior attempts. Priced at almost the bare minimum, Langley is worth a look and provides lots of salary relief.
Alternate Options: Andrew Putnam ($6,800), Vaughn Taylor ($6,700), Denny McCarthy ($6,600), and Ryan Armour ($6,100)
