1. Anthony Rendon

Miguel Andujar’s decision to undergo surgery to replace his torn labrum cost the Yankees the player they believed would be their starting third baseman this season. Fortunately for Cashman and company, Gio Urshela has taken on the role and played like an All-Star.

No one really knows whether or not Urshela can keep up that level of performance over a full season. If he falters, it’s easy to envision the Yankees looking for another player to man the hot corner. If the Nationals fall out of contention, Anthony Rendon could be an attractive trade chip.

The 28-year-old is scheduled to make just under $19 million this season, but he’ll be a free agent this winter. That means this could be the last opportunity Washington has to get something of value in return for his services.

Even if the Yankees move for him there’s no obligation for them to hand him a big extension. Rendon could be a perfect short-term fill-in for Andujar down the stretch of the 2019 season. The combination of his stellar defense and powerful bat could give the Yankees a huge boost in their quest to win a 28th World Series title.
