Packers safety Josh Jones skips OTAs, requests trade
Josh Jones has been in and out of the Packers starting lineup over the last two years. He is now looking to force his way out of Green Bay.
Green Bay Packers safety Josh Jones has been a no show for voluntary OTAs in Green Bay and sources close to the former second-round draft pick say he wants out of Green Bay, according to ESPN.
Since Jones was drafted in 2017 with the 61st pick, he has been in and out of the rotation, starting 12 games over the last two seasons.
Last season the Packers went with Kentrell Brice and HaHa Clinton-Dix as their starting safeties. When Clinton-Dix was traded to Washington, Jones was passed over in favor of Tramon Williams, who moved from cornerback to safety.
Jones got his first start in week 11 after a Brice injury in the Bengals game a week prior.
During this offseason, the Packers picked up former Bears safety Adrian Amos and drafted Maryland safety Darnell Savage JR, pushing Jones farther down the depth chart.
Sources close to Jones believe the trade would be beneficial to both sides, allowing Jones to get playing time somewhere else. He originally showed up on April 8th to offseason workouts, but he is currently working out in Florida.
Jones reportedly already asked Packers’ general manager Brian Gutekunst for a trade. However, no moves have been made.
During his rookie campaign, Jones played in all 16 games and started in 7 of them. He ended that season with 71 tackles, one interception, and two sacks. He struggled in coverage last season and did not post an interception.
Although his role seems to be diminishing on defense, he has been a great addition to the special team’s squad.
With two new starting safeties on the roster, we will see if Josh Jones shows up to mandatory minicamp starting in June.
