Maryland – Doug Flutie
Perhaps one of the most important things about Doug Flutie is that, at just 5-foot-9, he ended a 13-year drought for the quarterback position, winning the Heisman Trophy. In 1984, Flutie, a Manchester, Maryland native, put together an impressive season under center, in a time where running quarterbacks weren’t as prevalent as today’s game.
Flutie put together 3,634 passing yards and 30 passing touchdowns that season to take home the Heisman Trophy, and also gained 379 yards on the ground with three additional rushing touchdowns in his pursuit to the trophy. In that season, Flutie’s Boston College alma finished at 10-2, with a notable hail-mary touchdown victory over Miami in the Orange Bowl at the end of the road.
Flutie won the Heisman, the Davey O’Brien Award, the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award for his effort and was named a consensus All-American for his troubles, putting together an incredible season as a dual-threat quarterback, even before the rise of the dual-threat gunslinger.
Flutie would finish his collegiate career with 11,728 yards from scrimmage, and 77 total touchdowns, before being drafted by the Los Angeles Rams, and spending time in several professional leagues.
