Michigan – Pete Dawkins
Some phenomenal football talent comes out of the great state of Michigan, but one of the most noteworthy players is Pete Dawkins, the third and most recent Heisman Trophy winner from Army. He won the award in 1958, when the Black Knights finished No. 3 in the AP Poll at the end of the season, finishing at 8-0-1.
Pete Dawkins is also one of the most interesting stories on this list of athletes and was an impactful human being on and off the football field, taking the note as Michigan’s best homegrown football player despite some hefty competition, including a close challenger in Jerome Bettis.
Dawkins was the man responsible for 919 total yards (third in the country at the time) and scored six touchdowns. In his total of three years with the Army football program, Dawkins ran for 1,123 yards and 11 touchdowns while catching nine touchdown passes, and 716 total receiving yards.
Dawkins was also the Brigade Commander at Army, studied at Oxford post-graduate, and was one of the top students in his class, also going on to serve 24 years in the Army. Dawkins was a force in his collegiate time spent at Army and was a noteworthy force off the field as well.
