5. CB Bashaud Breeland
The secondary was an issue for the Chiefs in the AFC title game, when Tom Brady threw for 348 yards by picking apart the secondary. The Chiefs decided to let one of their starting corners from that team, Steven Nelson, walk in free agency and turned to former Packersā starter Bashaud Breeland as his replacement.
Breeland, who signed a one year deal with the Chiefs last month, spent last season in Green Bay after seeing a three year deal with the Carolina Panthers voided due to a failed physical. The one-year prove-it deal worked out for Breeland, who made the most of his seven games with Green Bay, recording 20 tackles and two interceptions, one of which went for a touchdown.
Breeland has a solid track record as an outside corner, and the Chiefs need him to fill Nelsonās shoes as a starter in the secondary. The Chiefs will be facing a lot of high powered offenses this season and should be in a ton of shootouts thanks to Mahomes and their offense, so having corners who wonāt give up chunks of yardage at a time is key.
There is a risk factor involved with Breeland, who didnāt play a ton last year, but his track record with the Redskins indicates he should be a solid starter in Kansas City. The Chiefs need Breeland to play more like he did with the Redskins if they hope to at least get back to the AFC title game.
