By Ethan Lee
Of the 64 NCAA softball teams that were initially competing for the national title, only eight made it to Oklahoma City. Here’s who survived the super regionals and is in the Women’s College World Series.
Only eight college softball teams are left. It wasn’t that long ago that a total of 64 teams had a shot at making it to Oklahoma City. Now, the slate for the Women’s College World Series is set as the eight best teams in the country remain.
The field was cut in half following the super regional round of the NCAA softball tournament. The Oklahoma Sooners, in two games, took care of the Northwestern Wildcats. Alabama and Texas went three games in Tuscaloosa, but the Crimson Tide came out on top. Similarly, Florida moved past Tennessee in the Gainesville super regional in three games.
In Tallahassee, Oklahoma state upended Florida State, the defending national champs, in three games. UCLA took care of business at home in the Los Angeles Super regional, knocking out upstart James Madison in two games. Minnesota eliminated the LSU Tigers in two games while Arizona did the same to Ole Miss.
And then Washington, the team with arguably the easiest path to Oklahoma City, knocked off Kentucky in two games as well.
Now, there’s eight teams remaining that will compete in a double elimination tournament to decide which two teams will play for the national title.
Here’s who survived the super regionals:
