Archer reinvents itself every season now, ever since they left the office space of S5, and Archer: 1999 is certainly no exception. Prepare for space aliens!
FXX’s Archer has been reinventing the wheel ever since the series left the office of the ISIS spy organization, known then as Archer Vice, of season 5. Having said goodbye to its takeoff of the James Bond-Miami Vice genre, Archer’s been hell-bent on presenting a completely new creative vision each year.
This was especially the case after the S7 finale which left Sterling Archer in a coma, laying the groundwork for the adventurous inventions of the season 8 delve into 1940’s noir reminiscent of La La Land and Sunset Boulevard. Furthermore, S9 transformed the crew of spy misfits Archer, Pam Poovey, Lana Kane, Cheryl Tunt, Ray Gilette, Cyril Figgis and Mallory Archer to a fanciful tropical island in Archer: Danger Island. The finale concluded with Archer falling into an active volcano, but of course true to form, gets a second (or rather, third) lease on life by waking up in yet another reality, aboard a spaceship!
So there you have it, the latest transformation of this zany espionage series will take place in space. The reinventions took some getting used to after the story-arc-convenience of the coma, but the trope has worked out well, freeing up the series to reboot itself every year. It’s all part of the fun of this inappropriate, ever-developing animated show that includes a stellar cast of voice talent.
Get ready for creative riffs on Alien, Thor: Ragnarock, Arena, Star Trek: Next Generation, gladiators and a litany of space battles; all ripped to pieces with cutting jokes and comedic delivery. The adaptability of the FXX animated comedy series never ceases to impress.
What: Archer: 1999 (10th season)
Where: FXX chanel
When: May 29, 2019
Time: 10:00 p.m. ET
Many of the characters have provided fertile ground for persona evolution, and this season is Pam’s to shine. Series creator Adam Reed has written such richly-drawn characters, and Pam Poovey still revels in the crass jokes. In the space iteration of Archer, she is recreated as an alien creature, albeit with her fun-loving, but crude personality lovingly intact.
FXX has only picked up S10, likely the last season of this weird, richly-character driven pulp fiction series. Reed has also said that he is leaving after this season. Hopefully Archer can resolve the coma storyline and provide answers about this plot-driven device. Even if it doesn’t, and this season is the last for this innovative series, it’s been a fun ride.
Archer: 1999 premieres May 29 on FXX at 10 p.m. ET.
