MLB Daily Fantasy Stacks: Wednesday, May 29th, 2019
By Joe Metz
Welcome back to the MLB Daily Fantasy Stacks article. In this article, I will run you through the best stacks to build your cash and GPP lineups around and narrow down your player pool!
I’ve been itching to get back in front of the keyboard and with the Bucks season officially over (in heartbreaking fashion), I have time to get back into the MLB DFS realm with the Fantasy CPR gang and resume my MLB Daily Fantasy Stacks articles.
I’ve been playing the last few slates to get back up to speed and last night’s slate was a big “welcome back Joe!” with a 45% owned Derek Dietrich (pictured above) belting a trio of home runs in the Reds route of the Pirates. While I was unfortunately one of the individuals who did not stack the Reds, I will try and replicate the results that they posted with my stacks in this article.
Below are the scheduled games for tomorrow’s main slate:
St. Louis Cardinals (4.3) @ Philadelphia Phillies (5.8)
Detroit Tigers (4.5) @ Baltimore Orioles (5.1)
Toronto Blue Jays (3.0) @ Tampa Bay Rays (4.6)
San Francisco Giants (3.7) @ Miami Marlins (3.4)
Washington Nationals (N/A) @ Atlanta Braves (N/A)
Chicago Cubs (4.4) @ Houston Astros (4.7)
Kansas City Royals (N/A) @ Chicago White Sox (N/A)
Arizona Diamondbacks (6.1) @ Colorado Rockies (5.5)
New York Mets (3.3) @ Los Angeles Dodgers (4.3)
This 9-game slate comes with a handful of high IRTs to target from an offensive standpoint and also a fair share of low IRTs that could be a sign of some strong pitching options. With Blake Snell, the slate’s top pitching option, priced up at $11,800 on FanDuel, value will be vital if you plan to fit him into your cash games.
I will continue to provide this article in a similar fashion to how they have been all season, going with a primary stack, secondary stack and a value stack for your cash and GPP games. I also added a BONUS slide to this piece, power ranking all of the players that I have in the article, to give you a sense of how I will personally be prioritizing them.
With that being said, let’s get to it!
MLB Daily Fantasy – Primary Stack: Arizona Diamondbacks (IRT = 6.1)
This may be the least surprising thing in the world, but we have a Coors Field stack atop the article today as the Arizona Diamondbacks take on Jeff Hoffman of the Colorado Rockies, who’s 2019 numbers are below:
Jeff Hoffman | RHP
K% / SwStr%: 20.5% / 7.9%
SIERA: 4.36
wOBA: 0.432 vs RHB / 0.351 vs LHB
FB% / Hard%: 43.8% / 30.3%
The numbers above should be taken with a grain of salt, as Hoffman has only pitched 10 innings this season, but it should be noted that in these 10 innings, it’s the first time that Hoffman has posted above a 20% strikeout rate. It’s also worth noting that his fly-ball rate is extremely high so far, which bodes horribly for Coors Field. The below D-Backs are the ones I plan to target:
(1) Jarrod Dyson (FD: $3600 / DK: $5800)
(2) Ketel Marte (FD: $4400 / DK: $5500)
(3) Eduardo Escobar (FD: $4600 / DK: $5700)
(6) Blake Swihart (FD: $2500 / DK: $3700)
Unlike a lot of the stacks that I write up, the Diamondbacks don’t necessarily possess as much HR upside, but come in as a more well-rounded stack. While Jarrod Dyson only has a 0.147 ISO against righties this season, his 0.347 wOBA and his 12.7% walk rate give him a heightened ceiling with his incredible stolen base upside.
Marte and Escobar posses perhaps the most power, as both hold ISOs north of 0.200 against righties and wOBAs over 0.340. Swihart comes in as a bit of a punt play, but with Blake Snell likely the focal point of a cash lineup, he provides a heap of salary relief that is hard to come by in Coors Field. On top of that, his 0.194 ISO against righties this season also leaves room for some power upside.
Also Consider: Adam Jones, Kevin Cron (if starting)
MLB Daily Fantasy – Secondary Stack: Philadelphia Phillies (IRT = 5.8)
While I fully expect Coors to garner most of the attention, it also has just as good of a chance at busting as any other game, as evidence by last night’s underwhelming game. If you’re looking for a 1B stack to Coors’ 1A, the Phillies are your pivot. They square off with Genesis Cabrera of the Cardinals, who will be making his first major league start of his career tonight.
His AAA numbers have been far from impressive, as he’s posted a sub-par 21.4% strikeout rate to go along with a 6.84 ERA, 2.50 HR/9 and a 1.56 WHIP. This is AAA remember, so I fully expect these numbers to “shine” in his major league debut against one of the elite offenses in the MLB. Below are the Phillies that I will be targeting, as both sides of the plate are usable here:
(2) Jean Segura (FD: $3900 / DK: $4800)
(3) Bryce Harper (FD: $4300 / DK: $4500)
(4) Rhys Hoskins (FD: $4400 / DK: $4900)
(5) J.T. Realmuto (FD: $3400 / DK: $4600)
While this stack is not the cheapest, they provide a heap of upside if you are able to snag some exposure.
Both Rhys Hoskins and Jean Segura hold wOBAs over 0.430 this season against righties, with Segura’s at a ridiculous 0.544 with a 0.444 ISO, while Hoskin’s ISO sits at 0.286. Due to his career splits, I would expect Hoskins to be more popular. Segura never sees chalky ownership and could come in as an absolute gift tonight, especially when you couple in his elite 15.8% strikeout rate against lefties.
I’m really hoping Bryce Harper goes overlooked here, as he’s been heating up at the plate and actually possesses great numbers in L/L matchups this season (0.382 wOBA, 0.254 ISO, 50.0% Hard%). His $4500 salary on DraftKings makes him an even harder fade when he should be at least $500 more expensive in this spot.
J.T. Realmuto is the salary saver of the bunch, especially on FanDuel. The big perk here is that catchers tend to go overlooked at the C/1B position, meaning there could be some ownership for us to leverage. He holds a 0.385 wOBA and 0.318 ISO against lefties this season and hits the ball extremely hard (average EV of 91.2mph), making him a great bang-for-your-buck play.
Also Consider: Andrew McCutchen, Maikel Franco (dirt cheap)
MLB Daily Fantasy – Value Stack: Baltimore Orioles (IRT = 5.1)
The Orioles have quickly developed into one of my favorite teams to roster in DFS. They’re fun and are never priced through the roof while offering much more upside than the average fan/player may realize. The Orioles provide more relief on FanDuel tonight than DraftKings, which I will be focusing on. Tonight, they have an IRT over 5 runs and square off with Ryan Carpenter of the Detroit Tigers, whose 2019 numbers are below:
Ryan Carpenter | LHP
K% / SwStr%: 18.5% / 8.0%
SIERA: 4.66
wOBA: 0.343 vs RHB / 0.583 vs LHB
FB% / Hard%: 36.7% / 34.7%
No, the 0.583 wOBA allowed to lefties is not a typo. While his other numbers obviously point to a pitcher you can stack against, the wOBA allowed against LHB is just absurd. Obviously you can point to the lack of a statistically significant sample size, but trends are a thing in baseball and if this is a sign of things to come, watch out. Below are the Orioles that I plan to target to help relieve some salary from the top tier plays:
(1) Hanser Alberto (FD: $2700 / DK: $4200)
(3) Trey Mancini (FD: $3800 / DK: $5000)
(4) Renato Nunez (FD: $3500 / DK: $5000)
While Trey Mancini is priced up compared to typical value plays, his spot in this offense combined with his 0.363 wOBA and 0.229 ISO against leties this season make this play hard to ignore when writing up the O’s.
From the value perspective, Hanser Alberto clocks in as my top priority. Hitting leadoff, his 8.0% strikeout rate is elite, while his 0.240 BABIP shows he could see some positive regression approaching. He’s posted 7 hits in his last 5 games and should be a reliable cash game asset tonight.
Last but not least is a player that’s becoming more popular amongst the DFS community; Renato Nunez. This man has been crushing lefties this season to the tune of a 0.426 wOBA and 0.350 ISO and while a bit above a true value threshold, he’s one of the best point-per-dollar plays on the slate.
Also Consider: Pedro Severino (0.444 wOBA, 0.324 ISO vs lefties) – elite play to round out O’s stack
MLB Daily Fantasy Stacks: Positional Power Rankings
This is going to be a bit of a beta slide for the time being until I gauge the feedback and whether or not it is useful, but I figured it would be advantageous to rank the players in this article in the order of my priority on both FanDuel and DraftKings.
