Gleyber Torres

John Sterling has gotten plenty of chances to declare that “it’s Gleyber Day” on the young season. Torres has slugged 14 round-trippers on the young season and hasn’t shown any signs of suffering any sort of sophomore jinx.

It’s easy to make an argument that Torres has been the team’s most well-rounded hitter on the year. His .288 batting average profiles as well above-average in the American League and his OPS of .882 is a terrific mark for a middle infielder. There can be no complains with how Torres is handling the bat this year.

Interestingly, Torres’ defense seems to be making strides this year. He looks much more comfortable playing shortstop than he ever did at second base. He’s likely going to move back to second once Didi Gregorius returns in a couple of weeks, but Yankees officials hope he will continue the momentum there.

Torres entered the season with sky-high expectations and for the most part he has managed to meet all of them. He gets extra credit for maintaining excellent offensive numbers without the production of players like Judge and Stanton. It’s clear he’s a budding star in the Bronx.
