Austin Slater

Given the state of the San Francisco Giants outfield, they’ve tried almost everyone from AAA this season. When they gave Mike Gerber a shot, he hit less than .100 at the plate. Then they tried Mac Williamson, but they were eventually forced to designate him for assignment, essentially cutting him from the team. The next guy who will likely get he call is Austin Slater.

Slater has been crushing AAA pitching this season. He’s hitting .320 with the Sacramento River Cats. He’s also left the yard nine times and added six stolen bases. He’s been playing a strong all-around game. The Giants deeply need a great outfielder who can hit. Two other players who were called up from AAA couldn’t cut it, but Slater’s already proven he can hit in the Majors.

He hit .251 last year over 74 games. He had a lot of trouble with his power, but again, the Giants just need to get people on base. Slater can do that now.

Slater is already 26 years old, so we know his superstar potential may be dim at best, but he can give this Giants team what they need right now. It’s actually surprising the Giants haven’t called him up already. With the sad state of this outfield, one would think they’d like to have a player who’s tearing it up in AAA and has Major League experience.

The Giants just need to take a chance on some of these players at this point. Bochy may not be able to survive another lost season, and if things continue to go the way they are then the Giants may say goodbye to the three-time World Series winner.
