24. Aleister Black vs. Velveteen Dream at NXT TakeOver: WarGames

In the weeks leading into this match Velveteen Dream vowed to get Aleister Black to say his name. At TakeOver: WarGames the two men arguably stole the show. It showcased two characters with contrasting styles and approaches to their in-ring game who came together to tell a story in and out of the ring, and it still resonates with fans.

Considering Black hadn’t lost a match yet, and Dream wasn’t as heavily featured as much as Black going into WarGames, it could’ve easily become a squash match with Black walking all over Dream. Instead, the two went toe-to-to, move-for-move and even mocked each other’s mannerisms.

The crowd was invested in the match and the story, firmly siding with Dream as chants of “Say his name” broke out through the match. Small touches throughout the match, and the technical prowess involved in setting up exciting moves and spots, were what lit this match on fire.

In the end, after Black rightfully scored the win, he took the microphone and said: “Enjoy infamy, Velveteen Dream.” It was a nice touch to end a well-told story and match. Dream had earned Black’s respect.
