Daniel Teymur defeated Sung Bin in a featherweight fight on the main card of UFC Stockholm.

Daniel Teymur defeated Sung Bin Jo via unanimous (30-27, 30-27, 29-28), Round 1 – 0:50, at UFC Stockholm on Saturday, June 1, 2019, live from Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden.

After the judges’ scorecards were read out, Teymur dropped to his knees, celebrating his first win inside of the UFC.

In a post-fight interview, Teymur was emotional. “Everyone who steps in here tonight, they have goals,” said Teymur before he listed off everyone who had helped him along the way to his first UFC victory.

Round 1

Jo’s height advantage was immediately made clear as he towered over Teymur. Despite being the smaller man, Teymur pressed forward to start the fight landing a pair of leg kicks. Teymur landed a powerful left hook that stunned Jo. The Swedish fighter followed it up with a combination of punches that left Jo stunned and scrambling to escape. Jo was able to compose himself and land a knee to Teymur’s head. The Swedish fighter responded by getting a takedown. Teymur got top position but Jo was able to use his length to create separation. From guard, Jo was able to lock in an armbar but Teymur was able to escape. Teymur landed a powerful position but was unable to capitalize, allowing Jo to get back to his feet. Round 2

The second round started at a much slower pace than the first round. Jo looked much more comfortable in the second round after getting his first UFC round out-of-the-way. Both fighters were throwing significantly less in the second round but neither fighter landed many strikers over the first two minutes of the round. Jo landed a nice knee that split the defense of Teymur. Despite having a large length advantage, Jo was unable to use his distance to his advantage. Jo landed a solid knee to the body and a very good kick to the body. Teymur responded with a couple of leg kicks but neither had much behind them. Teymur got so frustrated with the pace of the second round, he raised his hands in disappointment and then dropped them completely, giving Jo a free chance to hit him.

The lack of action in the second round made it one of the worst rounds in the UFC in 2019. The round was a reminder of the Francis Ngannou and Derrick Lewis fight at UFC 226.

Round 3

The action picked up in the third round with both fighters looking more like they did in the first round after the sleep of a second round. Teymur found success with his leg kicks, while Jo relied on his movement and striking. As he did in the first round, Teymur came forward and attacked. Teymur was able to land with his punches. At about the midway point of the round, Jo went for a takedown but he was countered by Teymur who took down Jo and got the top position. Jo was able to escape without taking much damage. Teymur cracked Jo with a right hand and followed up with another punch. Jo was able to cover up and get away from danger. Jo went for a spinning head kick up missed. Teymur laughed as he was just able to duck under the kick of the much taller Jo.

Teymur started his career 6-0 but lost his first three fights under the UFC banner. The Swedish fighter entered Saturday’s fight knowing that a loss could end his tenure with the promotion. Saturday’s victory will give Teymur another shot with the UFC and he will have to build upon his victory.

After going 9-0, with nine finishes, Sung Bin Jo was signed by the UFC and made his promotional debut on Saturday. The fight against Teymur was the first time that Jo had one of his fights go to the judges’ scorecards. Despite the loss, the highly regarded South Korean prospect should get more chances to fight in the UFC.
