Alicia Clark busted out a ‘Great Knife’ right out of Silent Hill and went straight up Devil May Cry to start off Fear the Walking Dead’s season 5 premiere.
This recap contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 1.
The moment Alicia Clark appeared on-screen about 10 minutes in Fear the Walking Dead‘s Season 5 premiere, it was like video game mode had been activated. Zombie heads and limbs went flying as Clark went hack-and-slash, Devil May Cry style, to dispose of a barrage of walkers.
Her weapon of choice: a massive-looking machete/knife seemingly inspired by Silent Hill’s Pyramid Head inventory. It was enjoyable to watch the whole thing play out and from now on that weapon should always accompany her. Much like Daryl’s crossbow, it can easily be her new character-defining accessory.
Fear the Walking Dead’s season 5 premiere opened with an introduction to brand new characters, two youngsters out on a casual hunt. The situation would lose its luster when a walker approached and one of the boys’ rifles jammed. A plane would soon unexpectedly crash containing Fear’s heroes. Alicia would save the boys from certain doom by taking a walkers’ head off but more would come, and the rest of her crew were temporarily incapacitated.
One of the best zombie cinematography spots ever would follow with June/Laura having her face being touched by a walker. The viewer didn’t see the walker was unable to go through with his plan as he was stuck himself. The whole moment had a very The Strangers feel to it.
Morgan Jones would help Alicia fend off the walkers as the boys tended to Luciana’s major wound, pipe going through her shoulder and being stuck there. John Dorie would help shoot off some walkers trying to get into the area where June/Laura and Al were barely walking from injury. Eventually, an unknown girl would pull up in a van and tell everybody to “get in,” feeling very Terminator-ish. We almost half expected her to say, “come with me if you want to live!”
Still calm, Morgan would explain to the boys’ sister how they were on their way to find Logan, a man who had requested their help. The teenage girl scoffed at the idea, and Morgan responded in kind, saying that to be honest, most of the people they’ve tried to help are missing or dead. However, he wanted to push on regardless to find Logan. While the group tended to Luciana’s dire injury, the new trio would abandon them. One of the boys pointed his jammed rifle at them to get them out of the situation.
Subtle Morgan Jones/Wolf redemption recall
Morgan would later have a very Wolf-like recall when he wants to help the youngsters anyway while Alicia believes its hopeless. It was reminiscent of Morgan and Carol’s quarrel over The Wolf leader being able to be reformed or not. The group would eventually be contacted by Logan who turned out to not be what they hoped for. He was not fond of his workmate’s aspirations to help people and was just using them all to get his trucks back. Victor Strand’s group would arrive on-location with the trucks, leading to an armed standoff on the other side of town.
Keep in mind Strand’s truck group are separated from the plane Alicia, Morgan, June, John, Luciana and Al all took. Strand’s group has Charlie, Sarah and Wendell. It’s a shame Nick wasn’t around for the Luciana makeshift live surgery scene as it would have made for high drama. Actor Frank Dillane will be in How to Build A Girl, a new UK-borne comedy film later this year though, for those missing Nick.
While Alicia threatened Logan with a Grimes-esque retaliation promise, the rest of the group were still processing the betrayal. Logan, however, made clear his business wasn’t personal, he just wanted what belonged to him back, not any of their people dead. In fact, Logan was actually impressed they had flown a plane in an attempt to rescue him! He calls them a million times better than his former, now-deceased business partner, Clayton.
Al would go back to the plane’s wreckage after viewing a mysterious figure covered from head to toe on her camera. Meanwhile, Daniel Salazar was revealed to still be around as he appeared on one of Al’s tapes. Strand would discover the footage that had Al telling Daniel, “You know this would work better if you actually answered my questions.”
Al would get tased in the neck and knocked out by the mysterious figure to close out the episode. She had just contacted Morgan about the CRM documents (had a radioactive-looking symbol on them) she found at the wreckage.
