5 players the Phoenix Suns should trade the No. 6 pick for
1. Mike Conley, Memphis Grizzlies
Conley has apparently made it known he wants no part of a rebuild in Memphis, so based on that he would have no desire to be traded to the perpetually rebuilding/re-loading Suns. There’s also the rather large matter of his contract, which has him due to make $67 million over the next two seasons ($34.5 million player option for 2020-21).
But Conley has no real say in where he is traded, apart from any loyalty the Grizzlies want to show him by allowing him to pick where he goes if (when?) there are multiple offers on the table. Of course Conley would pick a contending team if given a choice, like the Utah Jazz.
Tyler Johnson and Josh Jackson with the No. 6 pick is a viable starting point for Phoenix in any trade talks for Conley, and one that could get Memphis’ attention on the idea of landing a recent former top-five pick as well as adding a second top-six pick this year. Those kind of young pieces would appeal to a rebuilding team, even if it means taking on Johnson’s bloated player option.
Trading for Conley feels unlikely for the Suns on the surface. But on the other hand, it would be an aggressive, all-in signal that the same direction as previous failed plans will no longer suffice.
