5 center fielders the Philadelphia Phillies could trade for
1. Kevin Pillar, San Francisco Giants
Pillar has already been traded this year, from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Giants. He hit four home runs with 12 RBI over a six-game stretch in April soon after landing with his new team, with two home runs and 13 RBI for since then (154 at-bats).
At his peak with Toronto, Pillar somehow never won a Gold Glove for his work in center field. He accounted for 7.4 Defensive WAR from 2015-2017 (top-six in that category all three seasons, via Baseball Reference). Looking at defensive runs saved and UZR metrics as well, he has fallen off precipitously since then.
Pillar has shifted to right field for San Francisco since mid-May, perhaps as a nod to his declines defensively continuing to be backed by data, but his resume as a center fielder still stands. Further, having to cover less ground in Philadelphia’s smaller ballpark should make it easier to move back there on a permanent basis with the Phillies. At the very least, he’s a better solution than Harper or anyone else to step in for McCutchen and Herrera.
Pillar is an average offensive player, with a 15-15 season (home runs and steals) as his generally established baseline. But a move to a more hitter-friendly home park, and into a better lineup, would automatically do Pillar a lot of good, to say nothing of joining a winning team.
