2. Sean Doolittle

Speaking of options, the Rays should call the Washington Nationals, who are full of options this season. They have plenty to choose from, whether it’s big fish like Max Scherzer or Anthony Rendon or filler pieces like Justin Miller or Anibel Sanchez. The Rays could use them, but the one that feels like the right fit is closer Sean Doolittle.

He’s one of the few bullpen options the Nationals have that’s actually reliable. He has 12 saves on the year with a 3.24 ERA. He will be one of the most coveted bullpen arms on the market this season.

Doolittle might be the most likely player to move this season. He is currently signed to a $6 million deal with a $6.5 million option for next season. That means the Rays could use him as a pure rental, or could option him to be part of their team for another run next year.

The Rays don’t necessarily have one guy to close out games. Both Diego Castillo and Jose Alvarado have six saves on the year. When we get to the playoffs, teams need to know the person closing the door can be reliable in the toughest of situations. It would be great for the Rays to finally have that reliable arm at the back of the bullpen.

In four different seasons, Doolittle has pitched in the postseason, including 2017 where he recorded a save for the Nationals. He’s got a 3.00 ERA and 1.08 WHIP for his career in the playoffs. This is the player the Rays need if they are going to take their shot.
