Real Madrid: 3 reasons why Luka Jovic is a brilliant signing
As expected, Real Madrid have finalized the signing of their striker of the future, acquiring Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Luka Jovic firmly established himself as one of the best young attacking players in the world with 17 goals in the 2018-2019 Bundesliga campaign. Due to his elite finishing touch, technical class on the ball, and awareness in the box, Jovic has drawn comparisons to fellow Bundesliga standout Robert Lewandowski, who was once on Real Madrid’s radar.
While Lewandowski will likely remain at Bayern Munich for the foreseeable future, Jovic is headed to Madrid. Eintracht Frankfurt, who purchased Jovic from Benfica after his highly successful loan deal expired this year, have sold the Serbian to Real for 65 million euros plus add-ons, per The Guardian. The deal is reportedly a six-year contract for the 21-year-old striker.
Real finished third in La Liga and struggled in the Champions League. Just one player, Karim Benzema, scored more than 10 goals during the team’s domestic campaign. This was a nightmare of a season for Real, but with Zinedine Zidane back in the fold and a busy summer ahead, return to Champions League glory is the goal in Spain’s capital.
Jovic will be just one of a number of major players to sign with Real during this transfer window, but he is by no means a secondary piece. A world-class player in the making, here are three reasons why Jovic is such a brilliant signing for Madrid.
1. At 21, Jovic is worth the price with the best yet to come
Although 65 million euros plus add-ons may seem like a hefty price, it’s money well spent from Real’s perspective. Sometimes it’s hard to believe Jovic is only 21 years old, given how mature he is on and off the pitch. He’s been a leader for Eintracht Frankfurt, nearly leading the club to a Europa League finals appearance, as Frankfurt fell to Premier League powerhouse Chelsea in penalties during the semifinals.
Jovic set the Bundesliga ablaze with 17 goals, a total bested only by the strikers at the league’s top two clubs. He was even better in the Europa League. His 10 goals and one assist in 11 Europa League appearances jump off the page, and it’s a sign Jovic could be a huge asset for Real in the Champions League immediately.
As impressive as Jovic is now with his lethal finishing and killer instinct inside the box, he’s only going to get better over the course of his contract. There’s a good chance Jovic’s transfer valuation could more than double by the end of his deal when he enters the prime of his career as a true No. 9, especially since high-octane goal-scorers will always be in demand.
That said, Real are usually seen as the final end point for star players. For Real Madrid, the aim is to have Jovic be the team’s star striker for as long as he’d like – or, at least, until he reaches a point where he’s no longer a weekly starter.
