The same report from AS that linked Chelsea to Christian Eriksen in January also mentioned that Jose Mourinho wanted him at Manchester United before being fired. While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has replaced Mourinho in United’s dugout, the Red Devils continue to be speculated as a landing spot for the Tottenham midfielder.

Manchester United failed to qualify for the Champions League and would technically be a step down from Tottenham in that regard, but they are the richest club in the world for a reason. There’s a certain level of prestige associated with playing for United, and it would be a big deal if Eriksen were to play a key role in United’s turn-around.

If Paul Pogba decides to leave United and Real Madrid offer enough money, there may be nothing stopping Pogba, who is clearly United’s best player, from leaving. Ed Woodward and Co. would have to immediately replace Pogba, and while there’s honestly nobody in the world capable of doing that, United could at least add another technical wizard capable of racking up assists.

Eriksen is that kind of player, and even if United keep Pogba, they could still use another player with real class on the ball. United had holes all over the roster, but they had an especially difficult time creating chances in the opponent’s final third. Aside from Pogba, only forward Marcus Rashford had at least five assists in the Premier League, and the aging Juan Mata was the only attacking midfielder creating chances on even a semi-regular basis.

As such, Eriksen would be a massive upgrade for Manchester United, and there’s little doubt they’d have the money to afford one of Tottenham’s stars. If Eriksen is to stay in the Premier League, Tottenham would probably rather see him in Manchester than with a different club in London.
