DraftKings PGA: 2019 RBC Canadian Open Picks and Analysis
The tour moves from Dublin Ohio to Ancaster Ontario this week for the RBC Canadian Open. For those Americans’ reading this, Ancaster is about 3 hours northeast of Detroit, and less than an hour from Niagra Falls.
Before we get into the RBC Canadian Open, lets talk about The Memorial. I was at the event and loved every second of it! I followed Cantlay from 12 into the clubhouse. The man was a machine with the irons and on the green. I am very excited to see him break through for his 2nd PGA victory. He had been building up to a win all year. It also helped that I picked Cantlay and had a lot of his ownership!
I went to the tournament as a media member and I was thoroughly impressed by the way I was treated throughout my time there. The staff was great, the arrangements were top notch, and they fed us very well. Shout out to Jack and everyone at Memorial for making my week magnificent.
Enough about my successes at The Memorial, we have a new tournament to research. The RBC Canadian Open returns to Hamilton Golf and Country Club for the 4th time. Only 32 golfers in the field have competed on this course, with the most recent RBC Canadian Open being hosted in 2012.
Hamilton Golf and Country Club is a short course, playing less than 7,000 yards. Even playing at par-70, this course is substantially shorter than what the pros are used to. The big hitters will hit irons off of these tees, while the shorter hitters will play fairway woods. The protection of this course is thick rough and small greens. That sounds a bit like The Memorial. With the soft conditions, golfers were able to go low last week. The same will likely come of this week. Listening to a radio show leaving The Memorial, a member of Hamilton was afraid that the winner might approach 30-under.
So, looking at what stats we should focus on this week, I am drawn to Approach Gained and Birdie or Better Gained. 30-under may be a stretch, but I do think the course will be carved this week. With DK scoring the way that it is, you are going to have to have guys that can score!

DraftKings PGA: 2019 RBC Canadian Picks
Rory McIlroy 11,200
Rory had a tough week at The Memorial. I am banking on a bounce back for one of the best golfers in the world. Even with the MC, Rory still ranks 4th in my model. Rory Ranks in the top 10 in 10/14 stats that I am favoring. He ranks 1st in the field in opportunities gained and DK gained.
Matt Kuchar 10,200
Kuchar is another golfer coming off of a missed cut at The Memorial. Kuchar was on a roll before the MC. This course would seem to fit what Kuchar does well. Kuchar is top 10 in the field in Approach, Par 4 gained, BOB gained, and DK gained. He was owned at 36% last week, so hopefully everyone has soured on old Matt Kuchar.
Henrik Stenson 9,100
This course fits Stenson perfectly. This course is described as a 2nd shot golf course, the greens are slow, and the preferred tool off the tee is to club down. Stenson’s approach game is ridiculous right now, he is just struggling with the rest of his game. I like him to win the tournament this week.

Erik Van Rooyen 7,800
This is a pure “he fits my model” play. EVR has had a solid year on the Euro Tour, but the stats we have are from Majors and WGC events. He is 4/4 made cuts in those events. On the Euro Tour this year EVR has 4 top-10’s in 12 events this year. His approach stats and scoring stats are not entirely impressive on the Euro Tour, but the results do not lie. And he ranks 8th in my model.
Peter Malnati 7,100
Malnati seems like the nicest guy. I followed him on a couple holes and he was extremely loose. He was waving at fans, making jokes, and giving the kids signed balls. He was 17th at The Memorial. Malnati is known as a plus putter, but he is riding hot irons right now. I am hoping that his irons stay hot this week.
Jim Knous 6,800
I will take the engineer to round out my roster. He has a tendency to go very low. He ranks in the top 20 in par 4 gained and putting gained. His recent form is solid, with 3/4 made cuts and a T13 at Wells Fargo. Even with that, playing Knous is a risk.
