How is Hulu releasing The Handmaid’s Tale season 3? The critically acclaimed series returns for a new season this week, leaving TV fans wondering how they can watch and when they should be streaming.
Traditionally, streaming services go one of two ways when dropping a new season: either making it available all at once, or premiering one episode a week just like on regular, over the air TV. With this season, though, Hulu is making it available both ways.
The Handmaid’s Tale season premiere is available today, along with the next two episodes. Fans can stream the first three installments now and find out what happened to June (Elisabeth Moss) after last season’s struggles.
However, the ten episodes after that will be released one at a time, every Wednesday starting at 3:01 a.m. ET (that’s 12:01 a.m. for West Coast audiences, and adjust as necessary for other time zones).
That means the season will end up lasting more than two months—the Handmaid’s Tale season finale won’t drop until Aug. 14.
What’s the rationale behind using both approaches? Hulu can get viewers excited by serving up a small binge-sized portion this week, but then get the most possible mileage out of their biggest hit by extending the season longer.
In a way, that also serves different types of viewers, because some can watch as it arrives and those who really want to binge the whole season can do so in August. Of course, that’s assuming Handmaid’s Tale fans can wait that long to see the new episodes.
