France open the Women’s World Cup at home on Friday, June 7 against South Korea at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Here’s what you need to know before tuning in.

France gets the 24-nation Women’s World Cup going on Friday when they take on South Korea at the famed Parc des Princes in Paris. The Group A encounter, which sees Les Bleus as favorites, kick off the month-long women’s soccer extravaganza in France.

The home of PSG will serve as the centerpiece for the tournament’s opening ceremony, followed by the host nation taking on South Korea. France, currently ranked No. 4 by FIFA, are among the favorites to win the title. The women’s tournament comes a year after the French men’s team captured the World Cup in Russia.

Like many home teams at a World Cup, France will have to deal with the pressures of playing at home. France, however, is hoping to use the home turf to their advantage. At the World Cup in Canada four years ago, France crashed out at the quarterfinals against Germany on penalties. After failing to win the Olympics in 2016 and the Euros a year later, the players are out for revenge.

Like the men’s squad, France is a multi-cultural team that’s stacked with talent and features a blend of many playing styles. The opening match should not disappoint given the enthusiasm from the expected sellout crowd of 48,000 that will greet Le Bleus.

The core of this team is formed by players who hail from Lyon, arguably the most-successful female club at the moment. The French midfield is led by team captain Amandine Henry, one of the best in the world at that position, and it will be her leadership and work ethic that this team will rely on.

The French, with their mix of youth and veterans, should overmatch the South Koreans, who will be playing in their third World Cup. Nonetheless, the team that finished fifth at last year’s Asian Games could very well pull off an upset should the French somehow get off to a bad start.
