Early DraftKings MLB Picks June 9: All the way with Ray
The early slate is the de facto main slate again today for our DraftKings MLB tournaments. 10 of the 15 games take place prior to 1:15 Eastern. There aren’t as many good pitchers today, but we have some aces priced down. Are they really a value? Let’s take a look!

Rain doesn’t look to be a problem today, but some wind could affect things. There is a brisk 15 mph wind in from right in Philly. We have a 12 mph crosswind in New York and a 12 mph wind out to left in Cleveland. The wind is coming in at 12 mph from left in Detroit. Will that keep the Twins in the park? That same wind is coming in in Kansas City as well.
I went heavy on Giolito, so all but one of my early lineups cashed. I was also heavy on Nelson Cruz and Brewers, so it was a pretty good day. The night slates weren’t all that great. My Hill/Mad Max lineup made minimum cash thanks to overachieving cheap bats.
These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on, and we all attack the slate from different angles.

DraftKings MLB Pitcher Plays:
Top Tier:
Jake Odorizzi ($10,900): The Tigers are hitting just .189 against Odorizzi in 74 at bats with just two runs and 21 strikeouts. Odorizzi’s strikeouts continue to be a little lower against the Tigers, but you can’t argue with his dominance of them. Actually, Odorizzi is pretty much dominating everyone this year. He is 8-2 with a 1.96 ERA in 12 starts, including a 29.2 DraftKings point gem against the Tigers earlier this year.
Robbie Ray ($10,600): We saw Greinke mow down the Blue Jays yesterday. More of the same is in store for the Jays today. They are a free swinging bunch, and Ray has always been a guy that racks up strikeouts. This year is no different. Ray has 91 strikeouts in 69.2 innings pitched. Giolito broke the slate yesterday. Ray could do the same today.
Shane Bieber ($10,200): You don’t really need to avoid pitchers against the Yankees with them as beat up as they are, especially with Bieber posting a 2.91 ERA in seven home starts this year. I think Bieber will be mostly overlooked because of the two elite matchups in front of him, but I could see Bieber having a game close to the level of the other two at much lower ownership.
Middle Tier:
Wade Miley ($9,100): Miley has been brilliant at home this year, posting a 2.23 ERA in six starts in Houston. This promises to be one of the better ones with the Orioles coming to town. Sure, they have a lot of right handed bats, but the Orioles strike out a lot. That alone could vault Miley into the top tier, especially when you consider his home numbers this year.
Aaron Nola ($8,600): Pivetta dominated the Reds yesterday, so there is hope that Nola could duplicate the feat. Nola’s ERA is a much more acceptable 3.43 in eight home starts, so I’m inclined to use him here against the free swinging Reds. We just can’t use Nola on the road this year. Home seems safe, especially against the neutered Reds offense.
Bargain Pitchers:
Pablo Lopez ($7,800): Lopez is money at home, posting a 1.84 ERA in five home starts. On top of that, he dominated the Brewers in Milwaukee in his last start. Still not a believer? Lopez has faced the Braves twice already this year. While his outing against them in Atlanta was average, he put up 23.1 DraftKings points on the Bravos in Miami. He is my favorite SP2 option today, and it’s not close.
Glenn Sparkman ($5,000): It takes a big leap of faith to drop down to Sparkman here. On one hand, Sparkman has a 2.31 ERA in 23.1 home innings this year. On the other hand, Sparkman’s only road start was a disaster against this White Sox team in Chicago. Sparkman gave up four runs in just one inning. How much antacid to you have?
My picks: Odorizzi, Lopez; Odorizzi, Ray; Ray, Lopez, Miley, Lopez
DraftKings MLB daily notes:
Clayton Richard has been strong at home this year, but this is a pretty bad matchup for him with all of the righties that Arizona has. Adam Jones homered against him with Baltimore earlier in his career, and he has never retired Eduardo Escobar. Nick Ahmed looks like a strong play on the cheap as well.
Jeff Hoffman has been awful no matter which park he has pitched in. A Mets stack seems prudent here. Even if I don’t go a full stack, I will have a lot of exposure to Pete Alonso and Conforto. Most of my shares will be of Amed Rosario.
Thor has a 4.83 ERA and less than a strikeout per inning. This isn’t just a road issue either. The Rockies don’t hit well on the road, but they could do enough here to warrant using. Arenado and Ian Desmond havew both homered against Thor. Daniel Murphy continues to punish his former team, and Charlie Blackmon has score more runs against Thor than any other active Rockies player.
Ryan Carpenter hasn’t been all that bad against the Twins so far, but he hasn’t pitched against them this year either. The Twins hammer everything. Sano homered off of Carpenter last year. I’m a big fan of Nelson Cruz, Buxton, Jorge Polanco as well.
It’s a bullpen day for the Yankees, so Jose Ramirez is pretty much a free space on DraftKings at his price. I really like Lindor, Jason Kipnis, and Carlos Santana for a very affordable Cleveland stack.
Max Fried is not pitching well on the road, and the Marlins have quietly hit lefties well. Brian Anderson, Starlin Castro, and Harold Ramirez will be the value plays sprinkled throughout my lineups. I likely wont put all in the same lineup though.
I kind of like Dylan Bundy tonight, but I think his price is more than I want to pay. I still don’t trust the Astros, either to use them or to use a pitcher against them. I do like a reasonably priced Josh Reddick and Gurriel here. I’m not sure if I want Bregman or not, and it has everything to do with how loaded third base is this afternoon.
Steven Brault has good career numbers against Milwaukee, but I simply can’t trust that with the way he has pitched this year. Moose continues to light it up, and he hit a two run homer in his only game against Brault. Jesus Aguliar has a homer against Brault as well, and is super cheap. A recently hot Orlando Arcia looks good too.
The other side of this may be the better place to stack. Chase Anderson has given up a staggering 10 homers in 156 at bats to the Pirates. Gregory Polanco has five of them! Starling Marte and Adam Frazier have two each. Brewer killer Colin Moran has the other. Add another to an already loaded third base pool!
Reynaldo Lopez has bad career numbers against the Royals, and this year hasn’t offered any relief. In three starts against the Royals, Lopez has allowed ten runs. Jorge Soler, Ryan O’Hearn, Merrifield, and Alex Gordon have all homered against Lopez. Take your pick today.
DraftKings MLB one-off plays:
I’m not attacking Blake Snell, but I’m not using him in Boston either. I would much rather play a cheap Mookie Betts since he is 6-20 with a homer and six RBI against Snellzilla.
Eduardo Rodriguez is a different pitcher at home. His DraftKings points per game average is almost double what it is on the road. I don’t trust this enough to use him, but I’m not going to chase after him either. Well, not much. I still like Yandy Diaz and Willy Adames for the price.
Jay Bruce is about the only Phillie I would consider, and I’m not that high on it because of his ground ball tendencies. By the way, Bryce Harper is 0-7 with four strikeouts in his career against Sonny Gray.

If you think Nola’s struggles will carry over to home, Derek Dietrich is the guy you want to go after him with. Dietrich is 5-19 with a homer and three RBI against Nola in his career.
You could throw Vlad Jr. or Randal Grichuk out there against Ray, but he doesn’t really give up a lot of homers either. Honestly, this is a horrible matchup for Toronto no matter how you look at it.
Didi Gregorius is the only Yankee I would even remotely consider right now. There isn’t a lot to like about this offense right now.
Pablo Lopez has dominated at home, but I can’t just ignore Ronald Acuna, who is 4-8 with two homers and three RBI against Lopez already.
A couple of Orioles one offs make sense here. Renato Nunez is my favorite due to the cheaper power potential. Keon Broxton is the same, but he makes far less contact that Nunez.
I will have a few one off White Sox, but mostly Eloy Jimenez. He provided the most potential bang against the powder keg that is Glenn Sparkman. Yoan Moncada did homer against Sparkman earlier this year.
