Alex Morgan leads USWNT in 13-goal World Cup rout
Alex Morgan and the U.S. women’s national soccer team score 13 goals in opening World Cup game, Braves tie record first set in 1961 and other moments you missed from June 11, 2019.
1. U.S. women’s national soccer team scores 13 goals in complete domination of Thailand
The sport of soccer is called “football” by the majority of the world and the U.S. women’s national soccer team gave new meaning to this when they scored the equivalent to two touchdowns and an extra point in their first opening-round game of the 2019 World Cup. The team scored a FIFA World Cup record 13 goals, with five coming from veteran Alex Morgan. The beating was so severe that some questioned whether the goal total showed good sportsmanship. Yet with goal-differential playing a factor in whether teams advance, it’s hard to blame the wonder women for pouring it on.
2. Hunter Pence hits bizarre inside the park home run
Texas Ranger outfielder Hunter Pence hit a deep shot to right field but it appeared Boston Red Sox outfielder Brock Holt would make the catch. However, Holt barely missed the grab and the ball ricochetted into the corner. Pence took full advantage of the fluke play and rounded the bases for an inside-the-park home run.
3. Braves hit a franchise record four dingers in the second inning
The Braves made some history on Tuesday with two sets of back-to-back home runs in the same inning, which tied their franchise’s single-inning total. When was the last time it happened? On June 8, 1961 when the Braves were still in Milwaukee.
4. Wellington Castillo blasts a grand slam to put White Sox up
Wellington Castillo got the White Sox rolling against the Washington Nationals and they never looked back. Castillo hit a four-run bomb in the bottom of the first inning to give Chicago an early lead and Castillo his first grand slam of the season.
5. Victor Robles shows not all superheroes wear capes with diving grab
The White Sox may have had grand slam on Tuesday, but not all their at-bats were as successful as Castillo’s. Washington Nationals outfielder Victor Robles robbed Leury Garcia of a base hit by showcasing his best Superman impression and going full extension through the air to make a diving grab.
6. Indians walk-off against the Reds in Ohio matchup
Cleveland and Cincinnati remain tied 1-1 after nine innings, but Oscar Mercado gave the Tribe the walk-off win in the battle of Ohio thanks to a 10th inning RBI single.
Ironically, the walk-off single comes on the 10-year anniversary of Shin-Soo Choo’s walk-off single that had the birds buzzing.
Overtime: Laila Anderson headed to the Stanley Cup to support her boys in blue
Laila Anderson, a ten-year-old girl battling hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) — a rare disease that she and only 15 other children in the world have been diagnosed with — attended Game 3 of the NHL Western Conference Finals earlier this season, a tremendous feat considering that her disease has confined her solely to her home and the St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Yet she’ll get another change of scenery in TD Garden as she travels to Boston to watch her St. Louis Blues take on the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup.
